GSM V220 – 40-Pin Board to Board Connector

Problem

Service is aware of an issue, identified in factory testing and highlighted by the
field, on the GSM V220. Some units, returned with various customer complaints
including “Turn On/Off – No Turn On” and “Display Main – No Display”, were
found to be caused by poor connection between the flex cable and the PCBA at
the J932 40-pin connector. In some instances it was found that the flex cable is
making contact with the edge of the base front housing. See Fig. 1.0 below. This
prevents the connector from being fully seated and will result in intermittent
failure after drop.

Fig. 1.0 – Flex Cable is touching edge of F-Hsg

The root cause of the issue has been determined to be a connector shift, due to
surface pulling tension, during pick & place – SMT process. If connector is shifted
in the wrong direction edge of flex can contact housing. See Fig. 2.0 below.

Field Service Action

Customer Returns:
When servicing GSM V220 customer returns, with various customer complaints
including “Turn On/Off – No Turn On” and “Display Main – No Display”, where
the failure is suspected to be caused by poor connection between the flex cable
and the PCBA at the J932 40-pin connector, then:

1.  Disassemble the housing and re-seat the flex cable into the J932 board

connector to determine if the failure is related to this issue.

a.  If the failure is not related to this issue, then follow normal

troubleshooting and repair techniques to repair the defect per the
customer complaint.

2.  Inspect the positioning of the flex cable, under magnification, to ensure

that is not contacting the edge of the base front housing. See Fig. 1.0
above.

3.  If the flex cable is contacting the edge of base front housing, then replace

the flex cable to resolve this issue.
