Intermittent Charging Indication (Mid-Rate Charger)

Phone Models:         GSM V547, V551, V555, V330, V635
Level of Repair:

Problem

Service is aware of an issue, identified in the NPI Analysis of the GSM products
listed above. Some units, returned with customer complaints of “Charging – Does
Not Charge”, could not be duplicated in initial analysis. Further investigation
identified an intermittent software issue that can result in the phone not
displaying the proper charging indication. The failure can be duplicated using a
mid-rate charger and repeatedly inserting and removing the charger.
See detailed duplication steps below.
Once in this state, no current is flowing from the charger to the phone.
The phone will stay in this state until the next power cycle.

Steps to Duplicate:

Note: A Mid-Rate Charger and mostly discharged battery is required (=<3.2V)
1) Power up the phone
2) Plug in the mid rate charger, and wait for the phone to recognize it and start
charging
3) Unplug the charger; the battery life indicator will jump up to 2 or 3 green bars
(it will drop back to 0 bars after 3-4 seconds)
4) Plug in the charger while the indicator still shows green bars (approx. 2-3
seconds after unplug)
5) Failure condition is reached when phone displays "Low Battery" while charger
is plugged in.

Solution

A software solution has been integrated into later software versions.
V547, V551, V555, V330 - R472_G_08.18.1DR and later
V635 – R474_G_08.48.48R.9 and later, R474_G_08.48.69R and later
