TOPIC / THEME: Function - 1v1 Attacking an Opponent
DESCRIPTION OF PRACTICE:
A functional practice to improve the player's decision making and skill in eliminating an approaching defender with there 1st touch in 1 v 1 situation.
ORGANISATION:
Grid size: 20m x 10m
4 Attackers positioned at a cone in the middle of one side of the grid.
3 Defenders positioned at an angle on the other side of the grid
1 Server position on the opposite corner, but the same side as the Defenders
The server passes the ball to the attacker, the defender closes down the attacker
Two gates at defending end of the grid
The Attacker tries to run the ball through the gates
Attackers change roles with the Server and Defenders on the Coach's signal
KEY OBSERVATION FACTORS: 1 v 1 `Rooney'
Positive attitude to beating an opponent
Open stance to observe both the pass and the defender
Assess the distance and angle of approach of the defender
Attackers 1st touch to beat the defender depending on the defender's distance and angle of approach
Open body and attack the defender 1 v 1
Let the ball beat them and go down the line
Come inside, beat the defender with their 1st touch and by going inside
The 1st touch should take out the defender and the attacker should exploit space created
Create an end product by running, passing, shooting or crossing
NOTES:
Condition the defender to close at the appropriate time and speed
