ICE-DIVING IN RUSSIA

The Russian North has a great potential for extreme tourism, but a long 9-month winter turns most
of the year into a 1) ……………… season for most tour services. An exception is the White Sea
ice-diving, a unique local service attracting divers from Russia, the United States and Europe. The
ice-diving season lasts from February to April and is connected with light day duration on the Polar
Circle.

Winter diving in the US and in Europe involves 2) ……………… water lakes. By contrast, in the
White Sea marine creatures appear in all their glory in incredibly clear water with a visibility
reaching 50 metres, in a majestic scenery of fantastic ice forms. Under the vaults of ice and among
underwater rocks and rifts a curious visitor will 3) ……………… a meeting with their inhabitants,
such as soft corals and a wide variety of fish species, starfish, urchins, crabs, sea anemones and
shrimps. Sea animals in the White Sea may be less spectacular than in Egypt or in the Caribbean,
but white whales and seals won’t leave anybody indifferent.

4) ……………… most visitors are divers, guided excursions and even special tours for children are
on offer. Besides diving, other activities include admiring polar lights, watching seals and sea birds,
skiing, riding a snow mobile as well as watching and taking photos of sea animals in an aquarium.
Extra services are traditional net ice fishing trips, tours to local villages, visits to a reindeer farm
and to the Solovetsky Islands.
