RUBRIC:  Hello everyone! Today’s test is the London Tests of English Level A1.
The theme of this test is Changing Jobs. This test lasts one hour and fifteen
minutes. There are five tasks. Tasks One and Two are listening. You must listen
to the tape and write your answers in this booklet. Good luck!

Task One:

Summer Jobs for Students

Andy and Carol are students. They are talking about summer jobs
for students.

Listen to the conversation and draw a straight line from the name
of the person to their summer job. The first one is an example. Be
careful. There is one more picture than you need. You will hear
the conversation twice. Do as much as you can the first time and
finish your work the second time. You have one minute to look at
the names and pictures on page 3.

[ONE MINUTE PAUSE]

Listen carefully. The conversation starts now.

[FIVE SECOND PAUSE]

Carol:

Hi

Andy.

Andy:

Hi Carol. How are you?

Carol:

Fine - Andy, have you got a summer job?

Andy:

Yes, at a hamburger restaurant. What about you Carol? Are you

working at the bookshop again?

Carol:

No. You know the hairdressers in town?

Andy:

Yes.

Carol:

Well, I’ve got a job at the supermarket opposite.

Andy:

David’s working there too this summer.

Carol:

David? I don’t think so. He’s got a job at a computer company.

Andy:

David’s terrible with computers!

Carol:

Don’t worry - he’s not working with computers. He’s working in the

company restaurant. He’s washing dishes in the kitchen.

Andy:

Hey, you know Maria? She’s got a great job. In France!

Carol:

France? In a French restaurant?

Andy:

No, she’s staying with a family and teaching English to the children.

Carol:

That’s wonderful. She can study French too.

Andy:

What’s Nick doing?

Carol:

 He’s got a driving job.

Andy:

Is he going to be a taxi driver?

Carol:

No - he’s driving an ice cream van and selling ice cream.

Andy: Lucky

Nick!

Carol:

What about your brothers, Andy? What are their plans?

Andy:

Well, Simon’s helping at the old people’s home - you know, cooking,

cleaning and helping old people.

Carol:

And is Peter working at the hairdressers again?

Andy:

No, not this year - he’s going to be a waiter in a restaurant. I think

Luigi’s got a job there too.

Carol:

Luigi? The Italian on our computer course?

Andy:

That’s right. He wants to be a computer programmer but this

summer he’s working as a chef. Oh, look - there’s Nina - getting into

a taxi. What’s she doing this summer?

Carol:

She’s working at the hairdressers.

Andy:

Come on Carol. Let’s go for a coffee.

Carol: OK.

[FIVE SECOND PAUSE]

CAROL: Hello.

ANDY:

Hi Carol. Andy here. Are you at work?

CAROL:

No, not today. I’m on the bus. I’m going to the library.

ANDY:

How’s your job at the supermarket, Carol?

CAROL:

It’s terrible - it’s really boring.

ANDY:

Do you get up early?

CAROL:

Really early. For college I get up at 8 o’clock but now I get up at 6

because I start work at 7.

ANDY:

That is early. What time do you finish?

CAROL:

Usually at 4 but some days we finish at 3. At the weekend we finish

at 1.

ANDY:

How do you go to work? By train?

CAROL:

Yes, or by bus. But I come home with Jenny in her car.

ANDY:

In Jenny’s car? That’s lucky.

CAROL:

Yes. You know it takes 50 minutes to get to work in the morning, but

only 20 minutes to come home.

ANDY:

What’s Jenny’s job?

CAROL:

She’s a cleaner at the supermarket. She’s very nice. Sometimes we

drink tea together. But the manager’s horrible. He shouts at

everyone.

ANDY:

That’s not very nice.

CAROL:

No. Actually, my last day at the supermarket is on Friday. And next

Monday morning I’ve got a job interview at the Sports Centre.

ANDY:

But you don’t like sport.

CAROL:

Not tennis or football but I love swimming and the job is at the

swimming pool. And on Monday afternoon I’ve got another interview

at a coffee shop.

ANDY:

Carol, what are you doing tonight?

CAROL:

I’m watching TV until 8 o’clock but then I’m free.

ANDY:

Let’s go to that new restaurant in town.

CAROL:

OK. Let’s meet outside the cinema at 8.30.
