New JLPT N3 Prep Course Lesson 1

Introduction and Questions 1 & 2 of the Kanji and Vocabulary Section

What is the JLPT N3?

Non-native speakers of Japanese take the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test)
to test their Japanese language skills. The JLPT was revised in 2010, with the
number of levels changed from four to five. N3 is a new level that was inserted
between the old Levels 2 and 3. It was pointed out that the gap between the old
Levels 2 and 3 was too large, and N3 was created to help fill that gap.

Criteria for JLPTN3

Linguistic Competence Required for JLPT N3

Ability to understand   Japanese in everyday situations to
a certain degree

One is able to read and understand written materials with
specific content   concerning everyday topics
In addition, one is also able to read slightly difficult
writings encountered   in everyday situations and
understand the main points of the content if some
alternative phrases are available to aid comprehension

One is able to listen and comprehend coherent conversation
in everyday   situations, spoken at near-natural speed, and
is generally able to follow the   content as well as grasp
the relationships among the people involved.
