animalmagnetism,anditwashisideathattheplanetsaffectedhumanbeings

Ericksonbelievedthatusingstorieshelpedpeopleheal,andhewasquitefamous

usedasakindofasofteninglanguage.Embeddedcommandsmaybestatedasa

questionusinglanguagelike“I’mwonderingifyouwillgointotrancenowor

later?”Anotherexamplewouldbeastatementlike“Youprobablyalreadyknow

howeasyitistoloseweight,don’tyou?”

Embeddedcommandshelpthehypnotistbypasstheconsciousmind,andtheycan

Anothertypeofprogrammingusedfrequentlyissomethingcalledneuro-linguistic

way,shapeorform.Peoplewillnotrevealsecretseitherbecausetheycannotbe

madetodoorsayanythingtheydonotwishtodo.Inaddition,ifsomeonewereto

revealsomethingtoahypnotist,itwouldalwaysbekeptconfidentialthesameasif

theywereinacounselingortherapysession.

Noonecanhypnotiseanyoneagainsthisorherwillbecauseallhypnosisis

essentiallyself-hypnosis.Stagehypnotistsselectpeoplewithcertain

characteristicsandpeoplethatarehighlysuggestible,andmuchofthetrickliesin

HypnosisIsn’tReal

Ifsomeonedoesnotbelievein“hypnosis”ortheydonotbelievetheycanbe

hypnotised,thentheyprobablycannotbehypnotisedbecauseeachofusmust

allowourselvestogointotrance.Hypnosisdoesnotchangeanyone’spersonality

orinterferewiththeirmindinanywayandhypnosisisinnowaydangerous.

WhatDoesitFeelliketobeHypnotised?

Hypnosisisnotsleep,althoughthesubjectwillmostlikelyfeelrestedand

refreshedafterasession.Hypnosisisnotdangerousbecausethemindisalwaysin

control.Noonecanget“stuck”inhypnosiseitherbecausetheirconsciousmind

wouldstepbackintoplayinthecaseofanemergency.

Thereisalsonofearthatsomeonewouldnotawakenbecausethemindisvery

strong.Hypnosisissimilartosleep,butitisnotsleep.Itisalsonot

unconsciousness.Itissimplyrelaxedconcentration.Someonemayrecall

everythingthehypnotistsaysduringasessionortheymaydriftinandoutof

consciousnessawareness.

Whilesomepeoplefeelliketheyhavenotactuallybeenhypnotised,othersfeelas

iftheyhavewokenfromadeepsleep.Itisnotnecessarytobeinadeeplevelof

tranceinordertomakechangesbecauseevenlightlevelsareextremelyeffective.

Ifpeoplecanfollowinstructionsandrelaxtheycanbehypnotised.

CautionsandContra-indications

Peoplethatarenotidealcandidatesforhypnosisarepeoplethatmightbeunder

theinfluenceofdrugsoralcoholorpeoplethathavealearningdisabilityor

mentaldisorder.Itisalsorecommendedthatthosewithepilepsynotbe

hypnotisedaswellbecausethestateofhypnosiscouldelicitseizures(onlyfor

thosewhocurrentlyhaveepilepsy).Inaddition,hypnosismaynotbesuitablefor

thosewithaheartconditionthosewithextremelyhighbloodpressureorthose

thathavepsychosisormentalillness.Inthecasewhereonehasachronichealth

conditionthehypnotherapistmayseekapprovalfromtheclient’shealthcare

provider.

IsThereAnyTouchingInvolved?

Typicallyhypnosisdoesnotinvolvetouchunlessthehypnotherapistspecifically

asksiftheycantouchsomeoneduringasession.Forexample,some

hypnotherapistsmaytouchashoulderorarmtohelpbringaboutarelaxedstate

ofmind,buttheyshouldalwaysaskforpermission.It’salwaysagoodideatoask

permissiontotouch,wheneveritisappropriate.Permissiontotouchcouldbe

phrasedlike:“Duringthissession,Imayneedtotouchyourhand,forearm,elbow,

shoulderorforehead,isthatallrightwithyou?”

TheHypnoticContract

Thehypnoticcontractisalsoagoodpracticetogetinto.Whenyouasksomeone

permissionbysayingsomethinglike:“Wouldyouliketodohypnosiswithme

now?”youcanbesurethattheydoinfactwanttobehypnotisedandareawilling

participant.

HowLongWillitTaketoGetHypnotised?

Hypnosisdoesnotneedtotakealotoftimeaswell,andasamatteroffactthe

moresomeoneexperiencehypnosisthefasteranddeepertheywillgointo

hypnotictrance.Itisnotnecessarytospendhoursinahypnosissessionbecause

evenashortsessioncanbeextremelyeffective.

Themindmaywanderduringahypnosissession,butthatiscompletelynormal

becausejustasitdoesinsleep,themindwillgoinandoutofdifferentstatesof

awareness.

Hypnosisisactuallyastateofveryheightenedawarenessandfocusandhypnosis

givesoneaccessintothesubconsciousmind,wherechangesaremoreeasilymade.

Sincethesubconsciousminddoesnotknowthedifferencebetweenrealityand

imagination,itbelieveswhateveryoutellitwhileintrance.Whilesomepeople

maynoticechangesimmediatelyothersfinditmaytakeabitlonger.Hypnosis

allowsyoutooverwriteoldprogrammingthatnolongerservesyou,replacingit

withnewideasandmindsetsthatreflectthekindoflifeyouwanttobeliving.

Althoughhypnosisisahighlysuggestiblestateofmindthatdoesnotmeanthat

youaremoreeasilyledtodoanythingyoudonotwanttodo.

CanHypnotherapyBeUsedinaNegativeWay?

Hypnotherapycannotbeusedinanegativewaybecauseyoucannotbeledtodo

anythingyoudonotwanttodo.Sinceonehastoallowthemselvestobe

hypnotised,somemayfindthathypnosisdoesnotworkforthembecausethey

mayenterintotheprocesswithdisbelief.

ShouldHypnosisbeanAlternativeforaDoctorVisit?

HypnosisshouldNOTbeusedasasubstituteformedicalcare.It’sfinetouse

hypnosisalongwithyourmedicalcare.Hypnosisshouldbeusedinconjunction

withwhatyouarealreadydoinganditisnotrecommendedthatyouusehypnosis

asasubstituteformedicalinterventionortreatment.Ifyougaveachronicor

ongoingmedicalcondition,youshouldalwayscheckinwithyourdoctortoensure

hypnosisissafeforyou.

SuggestibilityTests

Theextenttowhichsomeoneisabletoaccepthypnoticsuggestionvaries,

accordingtotheirstateofmind.Ahypnoticsuggestibilitytestmeasuresone’s

potentialtoenterintohypnotictrance.Themoresomeoneisabletoexperience

thesuggestions,thedeepertheywillgointotrance.Thetruthofthematteristhat

everyoneissuggestible;it’sjustthatsomepeoplearemoresusceptibleto

suggestionthanothers.Itisnotnecessarytobeinadeepleveloftranceto

experiencechangebecauseevenlightlevelsareextremelybeneficial.

TheBalloonTest

Haveyoursubjectstandupfacingyouwiththeirfeetacomfortabledistanceapart.

Instructthemtoclosetheireyesandextendbothoftheirarmsoutinfrontofyou.

Nextaskthemtomakeafistwiththeirrighthandwiththeirthumbpointing

upwards.Withtheirlefthand,havethemextendtheirfingersoutwardwiththeir

palmfacingupwards.Nowaskthemtousetheirimaginationandactasiftheyare

holdingabunchofcolorfulheliumballoonsintheirrighthandwhileimagininga

heavybookorstackofbooksintheirlefthand.

Instructthemtofeelasiftheheliumballoonsarepullinguptheirrighthand,

higherandhigherasthegasrisesandpullstheirarmsupwards.Atthesametime,

theycanimaginetheheavybookweighingtheirleftarmdownasifitisastrainto

doso.Youcanvarythisinanumberofways,bytellingthemyouareplacingmore

andmoreheavybooksinthelefthand,astheirrighthanddriftsupfurtherand

further.Thefurtheruptheirrighthanddrifts,theheaviertheirlefthandfeels.You

couldevenmentionthediscomforttheyfeel,tryingtoholdallthoseheavybooks

inonehand.

Forfurthereffect,trytellingthematthecountof3,youwillthenplace3more

heavybooksintheirlefthand,asyousnapyourfingers.Youcanthecountfrom1

to3,andthensnapyourfingers,andhavethemopentheireyes.

Fortheresultsofthistest,youcanmakeanoteiftheirarmsrespondedtowhat

yousaidbymovingupordown.

Dependingonhowmuchtheirarmsmovewouldconstitutehowmuchorhow

Thistestmustalsobedonewithauthoritatively.Haveyoursubjectstandfacing

youandsaysomethinglike:

“I’dlikeyoutoplaceyourrightarmfacingstraightoutwithyourfingersextended.

practicewhileothersareusedaspartofstageorstreethypnosis.Eachandevery

subjectisunique,soitisalwayshelpfultolearnmultipletechniques.

Itisbesttoalwaysbepreparedforwhateverarises,asyouneverknowwhenyou

mayneedtotryadifferentinductiontechnique.

Manyhypnotistsstillusethestandardalthough“old-fashioned”hypnotic

inductionofprogressiverelaxation,becauseitworksonalmosteveryoneanditis

extremelyrelaxing.

Theonlydownfallisthatthestandardprogressiverelaxationinduction,inwhich

thehypnotistrelaxessomeonebyusingasoothingtoneofvoiceortakingthen

downalongstairway,isoftenverytimeconsuming.Learningsomeoftherapid

inductiontechniqueswillbeveryhelpfultohaveaspartofyourhypnotic

inductionarsenal.

Stagehypnotistsarenotoriousforusingrapidinductiontechniquesandtheycan

Beginbyinstructingyourclienttakeanicedeepbreath.Instructtheclienttotake

aseconddeepbreath–andthenathird.Onthethirddeepbreath,askyourclient

toholdthebreathforapproximatelythreeseconds-theninstructthemtoexhale

andrelax.

Nowaskyourclienttofocustheireyesonaspotonthewallorceiling,straining

Whenyou’relookingyourclientintheeye,itisimportanttoNOTblink.

fourdeemedas“powerwords.”Thesefourwordsareusedallthetimeaspartof

yourregularconversation.Whenyouusethemwithintheguiseofconversational

hypnosis,theyactivatethetwomasterkeysofflowandassociation.

Thewordsare:“As”,“Because”,“And”and“Means.”

Utilizingthesefourwordsyoucanactuallycreateunbroken,seamlesschainsof

ideas.Withthesewords,peoplewon’tevenrealizeyouarelinkingconcepts

together.Asaresultyoucanspeakthelanguageoftheunconsciousmind,

seamlesslyassociatingoneideatothenext.

someone.Whenyousay“Closeyoureyes“AND”gointohypnosis”youarelinking

theterm“AND”tohypnosis”.Inreality,thewordsdon’treallyhaveanythingtodo

behindthewordsofpoweristheyallowyoutoseamlesslyconnectideasorthemes

slightlyorgetasortoffixedlookorexpression.

Breathingpatternsareveryimportantcuesaswell.Alwayspaycloseattentionto

someone’sbreathingwhenfirststartinghypnosis,becauseitwillbeeasiertosee
