WORK PART ONE
Ok, I’m a regular drone. Yes, I really am. There is no doubt about it. Hard
work is not what I’m cut out for. Let’s face it, fooling away the time is
my middle name. There’s no denying that I lie down on the job when the
queen asks me to do something from time to time. It can’t be helped. That
is exactly my nature and I see no reason to change it. How could anyone
come up with this absurd idea of me following the bees’ example and
doing some odd jobs for a start? The bees work their guts out / off –
that’s true. But why should I be expected to roll up my sleeves and do
some work? It’s beyond me. Can’t they realize that I would surely burn
myself out in no time? They devised this labour code of theirs. It was
there that they defined all these dangerous ideas such as full-time
employment, overtime, job description, working in shifts and who
reports to whom. If they need to take on new staff they should feel free
to leave the beehive and organize recruitment among the bees from other
beehives and leave us drones alone. I could be involved in conducting
interviews for the jobs if need be. Why not? I always liked meeting the
foreign chicks no matter whether they are skilled or unskilled. Some of
them are quite cute and I wouldn’t say no to supervising them during the
orientation period or running training for them. Our human resources
department somehow fails to recognize my extraordinary skills for
dealing with trainees. I agree, I always take my time when I’m supposed
to complete an assignment. If it is so urgent why they should give it to
the bees who work under contract of employment and get paid their
remuneration in the form of extra honey. I work freelance because I’m
self-employed
and I feel good about it.

WORK PART TWO
Yes, I admit, I twiddle my thumbs most of the time. What else should I
do if I don’t feel like pulling my weight whenever I touch any kind of
work? I can’t down the tools, can I? What would the queen think of me,
then? The very thought makes chills run down my spine. What a shame it
would be. I hope the queen holds me in high esteem as an old hand with
impeccable work record. Of course, I haven’t done any work of
significance in my life. This simple way I haven’t had the chance to screw
things up. There are, however, times when we, the guys, the drones I
mean, have our hands full. It happens when we are expected to… well…
have a relationship with the bees. Naturally, it’s all for the sake of the
prosperity of our society. Believe it or not, but we spare no pains, then,
to perform our duties the best we can. That’s quite a job to do. There are
hundreds of thousands of bees to… well… have a relationship with. But
do we rest on our laurels? Not in the least. I, for one, work like a horse.
Just think what would happen if we decided to take a few days off or
most of us had a sick leave. A regular catastrophe. In short, I can easily
say that my friends and I knock ourselves out. And what do we get in
return? We are called lazy bums. We are threatened with termination of
employment or, worse still, dismissal for those who, unlike myself,
work part-time or work at order under contract of mandate. You may
think that they at least comply with the notice period drones have in their
contracts. Not at all. If you don’t follow your superior’s orders as
subordinates normally do, you are dismissed right away, or you are
made redundant as they officially say. That’s what happens to us for our
sweat and toil. Well, as a matter of fact, we do piece / job work, don’t
we? We should get paid accordingly, shouldn’t we? But somehow we
don’t! Each bee that we have to… well… you know what I mean, is a
single element that should constitute our remuneration. Yes, we should
get a salary like other white-collar workers. Especially that we hit a
glass ceiling whenever promotions are discussed. So, drones of the
world, unite and fight for your rights!
