Hole Saw Sander 

A recent project involved smoothing the contoured 
edges of several workpieces. A drum sander on the 
the drill press would have been just the ticket, but I 
didn’t have one that was the right size for the job. 
So I improvised.  

As you can see in the photo, I put together a 
makeshift sanding drum by wrapping adhesive-
backed sandpaper around a hole saw. The only trick 
is to avoid the teeth along the bottom rim of the 
saw. To do this, you’ll need to add a raised table 
to the drill press, as shown in Fig. 1. This table is 
simply a piece of plywood with a cutout that 
wraps around the bottom of the hole saw sander. 
This simple arrangement did the job well and 
saved me a fair amount of time.
