paper they were the ideal match.

On the superficial surface, it was easy to assume they were a real life

Ken and Barbie.

Caden Foster and Kelly Cameron.

Both born late in life to families that proudly boasted their ‘old

school’ and more importantly, ‘old money’ traditions, they were well
educated, civic minded and, according to Caden’s father, undeniably
headed for the Governor’s Mansion. It was already carefully mapped out,
down to the last detail, Kent Foster told his friends often. His son was a
born leader, destined for greatness, who would certainly make past and
future Foster generations proud. About this Kent had no doubt, and he was
delighted that his longtime friend Jonas Cameron’s daughter would be the
one standing beside his boy during his well-crafted climb up the often
treacherous political ladder.

Kelly was bright and beautiful, charming and well-versed in what

her role would be as Caden’s wife. A stunning blond with cool gray eyes
and a smile that could melt any heart, Kelly was elegant and graceful, but
beneath the sweet image she projected, she could be driven and cold and
determined when it came to what she wanted. And she wanted to be Caden
Foster’s wife, because he was going places, and she wanted to go with
him.

When Love Comes Back Around

That love wasn’t a part of the equation was fine with Kelly. She had

no need for love. Emotions hindered people, they created stumbling blocks
that simply weren’t needed in the life she wanted, standing beside Caden.

If Caden wanted something different … well, different wasn’t

allowed in their world, a fact his father had often pointed out and when
Kelly came into the picture, she repeatedly made if clear to Caden that his
father was right.

About everything.

He had a destiny; he had a purpose; he had a path he was meant to

follow. He owed it to his family, to those who would look up to him to
follow that path to its completion with no stops or detours along the way.

Logically, Caden Foster knew well what was expected of him.

Unfortunately, logic didn’t always factor into what the heart wanted

and Caden’s heart wanted only one thing.

One person.

And it wasn’t Kelly Cameron.

knew returning to his former hometown wouldn’t be

easy. Being in Ashton would bring him face to face with many of the
ghosts and demons that had sent him running in the first place.

He had accepted that fact before leaving the safe little haven he had

built for himself in New York, after receiving the phone call he had been
expecting for years. His uncle was dead and not surprisingly, he had died
in a drunk-driving accident after he fell asleep behind the wheel and
crashed his old pick-up into an oak tree.

The news didn’t shock Royce; it didn’t even upset him. He was only

relieved Hank Spaulding hadn’t killed anyone else when finally ending his
own miserable life, and Royce suspected that countless others shared his
thoughts on the subject. Hank Spaulding hadn’t had many, if any, friends,
leaving little doubt in Royce’s mind that a memorial service or even a real
funeral service wouldn’t be necessary, which suited his plans just fine. He
didn’t intend to stay in Ashland any longer than he absolutely had to. The
main reason for his desire to keep his return brief appeared in the form of
a big, billboard size campaign sign placed strategically beside the marker
welcoming visitors to genteel Ashland, North Carolina.

Elect Caden Foster For Mayor

Ashland Deserves The Best

It wasn’t a surprise, to learn that Caden was running for office, and it

wasn’t a surprise to see Kelly Cameron standing close to his side in the
professional campaign photograph, because Royce knew Kelly and Caden
were on their way to becoming engaged, if they weren’t already.

He knew all about Kent Foster’s plans for his only child and how

Kelly factored into them; but even knowing, he had to admit, to himself at
the very least, that simply seeing any image of Kelly with Caden sliced
right into his heart with the ease a knife would slice through melted butter.

And he hated himself for that. He wanted to hate Caden as well, but

he couldn’t. Like it or not, and he most assuredly did not like it, he still
loved Caden and always would, just as he knew that Caden still loved him.

Just not enough to pick me, to be with me, to tell his father the truth

and build the life with me that we always dreamed about.

background image

Instead, Caden had allowed him to walk away, saying it was for the

best for both of them, that he couldn’t just turn his back on what was
expected.

So he turned his back on me instead.

The truth was always a bitter pill to swallow, but Royce refused to

hide from it. He was finished hiding who and what he was. Being back in
Ashland wasn’t going to change that, not after ten years standing on his
own. He was proud of who he was and everything he had accomplished
without help from anyone, least of all the uncle he had come here to bury
or the lover he still longed for but knew he could never have again. Unlike
him, Caden seemed all too content living a lie.

No more than a week at the most and I’ll be back in New York and I

will never have to come near this damn town again.

He could handle a week, no doubt. No problem. He would simply

avoid Caden and he was certain Caden would carefully set about avoiding
him as well, as soon as he learned, likely from his father, that Royce was
back in town and any contact with him wasn’t an option.

And, if Kent said so, Caden would listen.

He always did.

The current state of their very separate lives was proof of that.

Chapter One

“N

.”

“Why New York?”

“I don’t know. It just seems so different. So far away. I really want to

be far away from here, Caden.”

Naked, as they lay side by side in the crisp green grass, sun drying

away their most recent dip in the lake, hands intertwined, Caden could
easily hear the desperation in his lover’s voice and it broke his heart. He
knew how difficult Royce’s life was with his uncle, who drank too much
and all too often. When Hank Spaulding drank, he was a vicious, abusive
bastard and it was usually Royce who suffered the brunt of that abuse.

Hank’s wife, Nancy, had left them years ago, not long after Royce

came to live with them, following the death of his mother, Hank’s only
sister.

In Hank’s twisted mind, he believed Nancy left because of Royce,

when in reality, she left because she was sick of the beatings and of Hank
cheating on her. Royce had made the mistake of shouting that at Hank
once, and in return, Hank nearly broke his jaw.

Caden had wanted to kill Hank himself after that, but Royce had

assured him it wasn’t worth it. He wouldn’t let Caden do something

stupid, something that would result in Caden being taken away from him
when Caden was the one thing that kept him from going insane.

Fast friends from the day they met, when thirteen year old Royce

first came to Ashland, the bond between them defied logic.

Caden was a Foster; his family was the most respected, most

influential family in the county and one of the most prestigious in the state.
Royce was the nephew of the town drunk, a man who couldn’t hold down a
job or control his infamous temper. Caden had no reason to speak to him
that first day, no reason to sit down with him at lunch while his friends
looked on in horror, but he did and doing so turned out to be the best
decision of his life, he would later say, when the friendship slowly
developed into great deal more.

They were sixteen the first time they kissed, alone in the locker room

after winning the State Championship and it should have shocked them,
but it didn’t. Nothing had ever felt more right, more natural, and Caden
suddenly understood why he had no interest in the girls who chased after
him and why Royce never dated. The next day, alone by the secluded little
lake on private property owned by Caden’s family, they kissed again and a
week later, in the exact same spot, both of them inexperienced and acting
only on instinct and what felt right, they made love for the first time.

Afterwards, holding one another, they said their first ‘I love you’s

and Caden promised Royce that no matter what, they would always have
one another. They would always be together, they just had to bide their
time, finish high school, maybe college, and then they could tell the world
what they shared. Plans for the future became their favorite topic, each
time they met in their secure place by the lake.

“New York or wherever you want to go, Royce. I’ll be there.”

“I know. I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

background image

A shared smile and then, their lips came together again, the passion

exploded, and they were lost in the only thing that mattered.

One another.

Pulled from his thoughts by the sound of a door slamming in some

distant part of the office, Caden Foster shook his head and cursed under
his breath.

He had told himself he wouldn’t do this, but he had known he was

lying. From the moment he heard that Royce Spaulding had been spotted
in town, it had proven impossible not to think back and remember and
even long for what he no longer had any right at all to long for. Royce
would certainly be the first to tell him that, to remind him that he had
turned his back, broken every promise he had ever made to the one person
who had stood by him and accepted him without hesitation or conditions
placed on the love he gave.

Unlike his father and Kelly and so many others.

Don’t. Don’t compare Royce and Kelly. It’s not fair.

And it wasn’t.

He loved Royce. He didn’t love Kelly, but it wasn’t as simple as

that. Nothing in his life ever was or ever would be.

Annoyed with himself, but unable to deny the urge, he unlocked his

bottom desk drawer and pulled out one of the books he kept stored there.
He had all five books Royce had published and he had read each one
countless times but now, he didn’t read the words, he simply turned the
book over to look at the photograph displayed on the back. Seeing it, as
always, his heart kicked and longing rushed through him. It was a simple
picture, Royce leaning back against a tree, powerful arms folded over his
chest, green eyes dancing with life, red hair wild and untamed.

background image

When Love Comes Back Around

All too vividly, Caden remembered what it felt like to run his hands

through that thick red hair as he and Royce held one another after making
love. He remembered what it was like to be wrapped in those arms, held
against that hard body with warm, taut skin and know the man who held
him loved him with every fiber of his being.

And I threw it all away

And for what? A career path he didn’t want? Marriage to a woman

he didn’t love? A woman he didn’t even like? All because his father had
said it was expected, that it was his duty, that he couldn’t fail his family.
Kent Foster had laid the guilt on heavy and Caden had bought into that
guilt, even when Royce told him not to do it, not to give into his father’s
pressure that he live a life he didn’t really want.

“He said he would disown me, Royce. I could lose my family.”

“But you would have me. Can’t I be enough?”

He should have said yes, but he hadn’t. Instead, he had taken the

supposedly easy way and he had regretted it ever since.

And now, ten years later, Royce was back in town and while he and

his father hadn’t spoken about it yet, Caden knew they would, just as he
knew his father would tell him not to contact or see Royce. It would only
cause the kind of problems they didn’t need going into a campaign and
logically, Caden couldn’t argue that point, but he couldn’t deny his desire
to see Royce.

Just for a little while. Ten or fifteen minutes. A chance to talk. That

was all he wanted. Ten or fifteen minutes in the same room with the man
who owned his heart. That wasn’t too much to ask, was it? Certainly he
could see Royce and have a conversation and not give in to what he still
felt.

Placing the book back in the drawer, he closed and locked it, locking

away that part of his life, reminding himself that he had made a
commitment to Kelly. She had already agreed to marry him and once he
was mayor, they would announce their engagement and begin planning
their wedding, if Kelly wasn’t already doing so quietly.

Ten years ago, his father had given him an ultimatum and Caden had

made his decision, knowing then as he knew now, that he had made the
wrong choice.  Unfortunately, it was too late to go back and make the right
one. Like it or not, he had to accept that reality. A reality, a life, without
Royce Spaulding in it.

W

ANTING

to get the ordeal over with, Royce made his first stop the funeral

home, where he met with the director and made the necessary
arrangements. The director, a man Royce vaguely remembered, didn’t
seem surprised when he opted for a simple casket, a graveside service and
a few flowers. He didn’t even bother with putting a funeral notice in the
paper. He had no doubt that the small town rumor mill would pass the
information to anyone interested. Royce was sure no one would actually
be attending the funeral as a farewell to Hank. Anyone who showed up
would be there to get a look at him.

Since moving to New York and beginning his writing career, he had

given several interviews in which he had openly admitted he was gay. He
wasn’t ashamed of who he was and anyone who didn’t like it could kiss
his ass.

Caden Foster included

Pushing all thoughts of Caden from his mind, Royce drove the Jeep

he had rented at the airport to the center of town, where he parked it and
set about dealing with a few more errands. It was a beautiful day, cool and

crisp, and the town was still beautiful with brick storefronts and a
cobblestone sidewalk.  Trees littered with red and gold and orange leaves
swayed in the breeze and he could hear kids laughing as they played in the
nearby park. It was very different from New York. Even if he hadn’t liked
his life in Ashland, he still liked the town itself and he realized he had
missed it, but the realization didn’t change his resolve to get his uncle’s
estate settled quickly so he could finally leave this place behind once and
for all.

If only you could leave the memories behind, too.

Already knowing that wasn’t possible, he stopped first at a small

diner he remembered and selected a back booth, ignoring those who
pointed and whispered and stared. He had, after all, expected such a
reaction.

After he ate, he went to the market to pick up some supplies to last

while he stayed at his uncle’s place and even though he dreaded it, he
forced himself to go to the bank.

Foster’s Savings and Loan.

He knew Caden worked there, but it was late Friday afternoon, so he

hoped not to see him.  His uncle really didn’t have much. Not even a
grand in his checking account, but Royce didn’t care. He didn’t need the
money. It would be given to charity. Maybe the money could actually help
someone. Hank certainly hadn’t been very giving in that regard in life, but
in death, he had no say and Royce could take some comfort in knowing
the cash wouldn’t be used to buy more booze.

Thanking the woman who assisted him with the paperwork, Royce

turned to leave, when a voice he had no desire to hear called out his name
and slowly, drawing in a breath and tamping down his temper, he turned
to face Kent Foster.

12

A tall man, with white hair and blue eyes that could only be

described as cold, Kent possessed none of his son’s warmth or charm or
passion for life.

Well, Caden use to be warm and charming and have a passion for

life.

Odds were, Caden was now more like the man standing in front of

Royce and Royce hated that thought. Kent extended a hand he glanced at
but refused to accept and after a brief, uncomfortable moment, the older
Foster allowed his hand to drop back to his side.

“I heard about your uncle, Royce. I’m sorry for your loss.” His voice

was deep, but not even close to sincere.

“Thank you.”

“I assume you are back in town to make the necessary

arrangements.”

“You assume correctly. As much as I might like to, I can’t just let

the old bastard be tossed into the woods.”

Kent seemed to pale a little at that, but he nodded and forced a smile

so fake Royce wondered if his face would crack from the strain.

“So will you be in town long?”

“Doubt it. After I settle Hank’s estate, I don’t have a reason to stick

around, do I?”

“I would think not.” Kent looked him directly in the eyes for the first

time and Royce didn’t flinch.

“It was a pleasure to see you, Mr. Foster. Do take care.”

“You do the same.”

13

He turned, rather proud of himself for having kept his cool when he

really wanted to tell Kent Foster that he was a son of a bitch, but before he
could make it do to door, Kent called his name once more and again,
Royce slowly turned to look at him.

“I assume you’ve seen the signs around town?”

“I’ve seen a lot of signs, so you will have to be more specific.” You

want to play, you bastard, let’s play

“Of course. I was referring to the campaign signs.”

“Right. I saw those. But y’know….” He shrugged. “I don’t live here

anymore, so Caden can’t count on my vote.”

“I understand. But there are other ways you can help Caden.”

Casting a glance around the lobby, noting that most eyes were on

them, Royce bit his tongue, refusing himself the right to say what he
wanted to say because saying what was on his mind would out Caden and
he wouldn’t do that.

Owning up to who he was, that was Caden’s decision and he had

decided not to make it.

“I would never do anything to harm Caden in any way.”

“I should hope not.”

“That’s your job, Kent. Well, yours and Caden’s. He does a good job

hurting himself.”

“Royce….”

“Have a good day. Please, tell Caden I said hello.”

Not allowing the older man the time to react, he turned and walked

out the double glass doors, into the cool afternoon air, releasing a sigh.

Smug bastard

Of course, he had a reason to be smug, Royce reasoned as he stalked

back to where he had left his Jeep.

Ten years ago, Kent had demanded his son make a decision and

Caden had, and nothing could or would change that. But sooner or later,
Royce had no doubt that living a lie would become too much for his
former lover, and that worried him.

If Caden reached a breaking point … the idea made him shiver

inside and out as he reached the Jeep, crawled inside and slumped heavily
against the seat.

Caden wasn’t his to worry about anymore. That was Kent and

Kelly’s job now and Royce wanted no part of it. He wanted nothing at all
to do with Caden Foster. The lie was so farfetched, he actually laughed out
loud as he cranked the Jeep and headed out of town.

Chapter Two

After a sleepless night in the rundown old house he had always

hated, Royce spent most of Saturday trying to clean the property his uncle
had left in near ruin. It took two hours alone just to empty out the beer
cans and liquor bottles, and the lingering stench in each nearly made
Royce sick to his stomach. It reminded him too much of his uncle, the way
he used to smell when he came home late at night looking for someone to
beat on. He would always carry those memories. Royce had long ago
accepted that. He couldn’t even stand to drink himself because he knew
what drinking had done to uncle and he didn’t want to risk walking down
that path. The idea of ending up as miserable and abusive as Hank terrified
him.

Relieved when he was finally finished with the house for the time

being, he stripped off his shirt to enjoy the cool breeze and set about the
much needed yard work.

It was obvious Hank hadn’t mowed in at least a year. The hedges

needed trimming and the outside of the house itself was a disgrace: broken
windows covered with plastic or cardboard, fallen shutters, badly chipped
paint, and a roof in need of a complete overhaul.

Looking at it, Royce knew he wouldn’t have the time to do all the

repairs himself. He would have to hire someone to do the work after he
was gone.

background image

Lisa Marie Davis

16

Or I could just have the place bulldozed

Logical or not, given the bad memories the house contained, the idea

appealed to him, but he dismissed it. He wouldn’t let bad memories
control his actions now. He was an adult. His uncle couldn’t hurt him now.
Only one person in Ashland could, and Royce had no intention of seeing
him.  He knew Caden would find that a relief, since there was no doubt
Caden knew by now that Royce was in town.

Kent will have told him and reminded him why he needs to stay away

from me

And Caden would listen, just like he had before, when Kent finally

found out about the true nature of their relationship, during their second
year of college.

The call from Caden, asking to him to meet him by the lake had come

as a surprise, and it would have been a very pleasant one, had it not been
for the frantic tone in Caden’s voice.

Royce asked his lover what was wrong, but Caden had insisted they

talk in person and Royce agreed, getting to the lake before Caden did, but
he didn’t mind. It gave him time to pull a blanket from the trunk of his car
and spread it in the grass, under a towering old oak tree. Despite being
early autumn, the weather was still a little bit on the warm side but the day
was beautiful with clear skies. Royce was tempted to enjoy a quick swim
while he waited, but decided against it, as he sat down on the blanket and
stared out at the lake while waiting for Caden.

He always loved meeting Caden here; it was the one place where

they didn’t have to hide. They could just be together, hold one another and
dream about the future.

Just two more years, Royce reflected with a smile.

background image

17

As soon as Caden finished college, he would tell his family about his

relationship with Royce and whatever their reaction, it didn’t matter,
because Caden had already assured Royce they would build their life
together and be happy.

That had been the plan since they were sixteen, when they finally

admitted to themselves and one another that they were far more than
friends.

Granted, Royce had known for a while that he was gay. He had

figured that out when he was fourteen, but fear had kept him from telling
anyone. He knew his uncle would kill him if he found out and while he
trusted Caden, he hadn’t shared his realizations with his best friend,
because along with realizing he was gay, Royce had also realized he felt
something for Caden that went far beyond friendship.

He had never expected anything to come from his feelings; he had

never believed Caden could love him, but that first kiss in the locker room
changed everything.

And it was Caden who had kissed him. Without warning, still on a

high from their win, he had pushed Royce up against a row of lockers and
before Royce could react, Caden’s lips were pressed against his, hard and
demanding and incredible.

The kiss was brief, but telling, filled with need, and when it was over,

Royce and Caden knew their lives had just changed.

For the better.

Four years later, the bond between them couldn’t be broken.

Or so Royce had believed.

Blinking sweat from his eyes, Royce realized had been standing in

the same spot for at least ten minutes, holding a fist full of weeds while
getting lost in memories he had no right revisiting. Disgusted, he tossed

background image

18

the weeds to the ground and stalked to the battered porch, sitting down on
the step that seemed best suited to hold his weight as he reached for a
bottle of water he had left there. Taking a long sip, he sighed and closed
his eyes, drawing in a deep breath. He knew he was being foolish, talking
a walk down memory lane. It would accomplish nothing, aside from
reopening old wounds that had never healed in the first place, but being
here … it was impossible not to remember, both the good and the bad and
worse yet, it was impossible not to long for what might have been.

What should have been. Damn it.

Despite himself, he wondered if Caden regretted his decision now.

Did he realize he had made a mistake? Did he ever wonder what it would
be like if he had followed his heart rather than his father’s expectations?

Does he miss me? Does he wake up at night wanting me?

He would never have the answer to those questions, but he couldn’t

stop himself from wondering any more than he could stop himself from
remembering.

He knew the minute he saw the look on Caden’s face that something

was wrong as the other man dropped beside him on the blanket he had
spread in the grass. He could always read Caden like a book; he knew
each of his moods, what made him laugh and smile, what sparked his
temper, but it was a rare thing to see Caden as he was in that moment,
with his beautiful blue eyes bloodshot from crying.

Alarmed, he sat up and Caden almost fell into his arms, burying his

face in the crook of his neck and as he did, Royce felt the tears against his
skin. Whispering Caden’s name, he tangled one hand in his hair, holding
him close, while the other hand moved down his back, to slip beneath his
t-shirt. It wasn’t a sexual gesture, but one meant to comfort. He knew what
a simple, even innocent touch meant to Caden. It was his way of
expressing feelings, conveying what he felt. Royce hadn’t known a touch

19

could carry so much meaning until Caden came into his life and many
times, after nasty run ins with Hank, Caden made the pain and anger go
away simply by holding his hand or running his fingers through his hair.
Royce wanted desperately to provide that same kind of solace when Caden
obviously needed it.

For a long time, they sat like that, holding one another, saying

nothing, Royce not asking what was wrong. He had a feeling he knew, and
more importantly, he knew Caden would tell him, when he was ready,
when he had himself composed.

When Caden finally lifted his head and looked at him, the pain in his

eyes ripped at Royce’s heart.

“Caden…”

“He knows, Royce. My father knows. All about us.”

“How? Did you tell him?”

But he shook his head at that. “No. He followed me here yesterday.

And he saw….”

“He saw us making love.” Royce stroked a hand through Caden’s

unruly black hair.

“Making love isn’t what he called it.”

“I’m sure. But whatever he called it, whatever horrible thing he tried

to make it out to be, we know better.”

“He’s furious. He said … he said a lot of things and….”

“Hey.” Royce’s cupped his face in his hands. “It’s okay. I know it

had to be hard, but he knows now, which means the hard part is over and
he will just have to find a way to accept that you and I are together
because we love one another.”

20

It wasn’t that simple, yet for Royce, it really was. He and Caden

shared something special and they both knew it.

Or so he thought.

Jarred from his thoughts by the sound of the phone ringing in the

house, Royce frowned as he stood and went inside. He had no idea who
could be calling. He doubted it was anyone for him. No one in New York
knew this number, which led him to believe the caller was likely someone
who hadn’t heard about his uncle’s death and since Hank hadn’t had any
friends, Royce expected the perky voice of a telemarketer to greet him
when he finally decided to answer.

He was wrong.

“Hi, Royce. It’s me.”

Four words, each one as agonizing as a physical blow to the gut, or

worse yet, to the heart.

Hand gripping the phone so tightly his knuckles turned white and

began to ache, a voice in the back of his mind screamed at him to hang up
and in doing so, send a firm message.

But he couldn’t do it.

“Royce, are you there?”

“Yeah. Yeah, I’m here, Caden.”

He heard a sigh, one that echoed relief. “I heard about Hank. I would

say I called to offer condolences, but we both know you don’t need them.”
It was a simple statement but it reminded Royce of just how well they had
known one another once upon a time and it annoyed him as he turned,
leaning his back against the wall, eyes closed.

Just hearing Caden’s voice … he could feel his cock growing hard

and he cursed himself for a fool.

“Look, I already had a run-in with your father and…”

“I know. He told me.”

Royce laughed, but it was a hard, humorless sound, even to his own

ears. “I figured that. No doubt he told you not to contact me. Right? He
reminded you that I’m bad news. I’ll ruin your life.”

“Royce....”

“Excuse me. Life isn’t the right word. I mean, you and Kent call it

your life, but it’s really your lie.”

“I deserve that.”

“I don’t know what you deserve, Caden, but I do know what I

deserve and I deserve a little respect.”

“I know. I know. I didn’t call to upset you. Please believe that.”

“Then why did you call? Why?”

“I just wanted to talk to you. I wanted … God, I wanted to hear your

voice. Okay? I wanted to hear you say my name.”

There was raw emotion in the admission and Royce winced hearing

it, hearing the pain mingled with a deeply rooted desperation he was
familiar with.

“Caden….”

“I have no right to ask. I know that. But I … I want to see you.”

“No. No, we … please, don’t. Don’t ask me to see you. It’s not fair.”

“I know. I’m a bastard for asking….”

“You made your decision. I wasn’t it. You could have stopped me

from leaving town but you didn’t.”

“I know….”

“I’ve seen the campaign signs. You’re living Kent’s dream.” He

opened his eyes and laughed again. “I can’t do this and I … you gave up
on me, on us, and you don’t get to call and ask to see me and you sure as
hell don’t get to act like you still give a damn about me.”

“I know what I did, but you have to believe me when I say….”

“When you say what? You still love me?”

“Yes.”

The answer wasn’t what he expected, wasn’t what he prepared

himself for and it seemed to suck the air right out of his lungs.

No. No. No. I can’t do this. I can’t fall for this. I can’t

“Your father wouldn’t want to hear that. Neither would Kelly. And

neither do I.”

“Royce, please….”

Unable, unwilling to hear more, he ended the call, aware that his

heart was thundering as he heaved the phone across the room.

Watching it shatter the mirror it collided with, overcome with

emotion, he sank to the floor, legs drawn up, his forehead resting against
his knees.

“When you say what? You still love me?”

“Yes.”

Eyes squeezed shut, his chest felt tight as the conversation echoed in

his mind, stirring his heart, and despite himself, he wondered if maybe,
just maybe, Caden meant it.

background image

Maybe he still loved him … maybe … he blew out a breath he

hadn’t realized he was holding, lifting his head to brush tears he refused to
shed from his eyes, sternly reminding himself that he didn’t need or want
this kind of drama disrupting his life.

He had a good life in New York. He had his career. He had friends.

He had put Caden Foster behind him when he left town ten years ago and
he couldn’t change that, couldn’t go back in time or allow himself to
believe they could have a second chance.

If Caden was unhappy with his life, and it was painfully obvious that

he was indeed unhappy, it was up to him to make the necessary changes,
but Royce couldn’t, wouldn’t, be a part of it because the odds were, Caden
would never find the strength to change anything or own up to who he
really was.

I won’t wait for what will never happen. I won’t be hurt again.

Caden was his past, and he had to stay there, even if his heart still

and always would want so much more.

Chapter Three

“W

E

 have a problem.”

“Want to tell me what that means exactly?”

Gray eyes flashing, Kelly Cameron turned to face her future father-

in-law where he sat behind his polished mahogany desk, looking cool and
dignified as always and Kelly hated him because he knew what she was
talking about.

But he was going to make her say it; he was going to force her to

actually ask for help because it gave him a sense of power over her and it
was always about power when it came to Kent Foster. It was his addiction,
what he lived for, what he most loved and Kelly recognized that because
she shared the same addiction, the same never-ending thirst for power.

It was one of the reasons Kent had hand chosen her for his son,

explaining to her, even before she started dating Caden, that he was
destined for greatness and she could be at his side, basking in the power
and fame, if she played her cards right. If she made certain Caden stayed
on the path Kent had mapped out for him, which meant, above all else,
keeping Caden as far away from Royce Spaulding as possible.

“Caden made a phone call last night,” Kelly explained as she walked

across the room to stand in front of Kent’s desk. “And in case you need
me to make it more clear, here it is. He called Royce and asked if he could

see him, but Royce said no and Caden didn’t take that well. He left the
house and didn’t return until this morning, around six o’clock.”

“Do you think he was with Royce?”

“No. He was at a bar somewhere. He came in half drunk. He was

sleeping it off when I left to come here.”

Kent nodded silently, processing the information as Kelly stewed,

tapping her shoe against the hard wood floor in annoyance.

“I assume he has no idea his calls are being recorded?”

“Obviously not. But it’s a good thing you thought to do that.”

“I think of everything, dear. Haven’t you realized that yet?”

She rolled her eyes, planting her hands on his desk and leaning

closer to him as he watched her with those damn eyes that betrayed
nothing. “Really? Well, I hope you’ve thought up a plan to keep Caden
away from his first love, because he clearly still wants that bastard.”

“Now, now, Kelly. Don’t get pissy.”

“Don’t be condescending with me. I don’t deserve it. If the truth

about Caden and Royce comes out….”

“It won’t. I assure you. No one will ever know about the past Caden

and Royce share.”

“What if Caden decides to tell the truth, admit that he’s gay? I’ll be

publicly humiliated!”

“Well, we can’t have that, can we?” He smiled the icy smile that

always chilled and fascinated her all at once.

“So you do have a plan?”

background image

Lisa Marie Davis

26

“Naturally, my dear. I began making the arrangements when I heard

Royce was back in town.”

“Do you plan on sharing what you have in mind?”

Pushing his leather swivel chair away from his desk, he stood, a

predatory look coming to life in his eyes that had her instantly on guard as
he came around the desk to place his hands on her slim waist. Turning her,
he pressed her against the desk and she placed her hands on his chest, not
to push him away, but to eagerly tangle her fingers in his shirt.

“Do you really want to know what I have in mind, Kelly? Do you

want the dirty details?”

Her red lips curved into a smile. “Maybe.”

“Not this time, my dear. After all, we want to keep your pretty little

hands clean.”

“And your hands?”

“I think we both know what I intend to do with my hands.”

Looping her arms around his neck, she pressed against him, feeling

his erection. It thrilled her to know that she could do that to him, that she
could arouse him.

That gave her a sense of power over him.

It was always, always, about power.

In the end Kelly knew, as did Kent, that power was all that mattered

and somehow, together, through fair means or foul, they would make
certain Caden faced that truth and accepted it. If Royce Spaulding ended
up suffering … well, Kelly decided she could live with that, as Kent
claimed her mouth in a demanding kiss that she happily returned.

are you saying to me, Caden?”

“Royce….”

“Because it sounds like you’re telling me you told your father that

you would give me up, and that can’t be, because you love me as much as
I love you.”

“Please listen to me.” He reached for Royce’s hands, but for the

first time in four years, Royce jerked away from his touch and stood,
leaving Caden to look up at him with desperation in his eyes. “I love you.
I love you so much it makes me crazy inside. But I … God, my father was
so angry and he started talking about how I’ve got to live up to certain
expectations and that if I don’t, I’ll fail him. I’ll fail my mother’s memory.
I can’t do that, Royce. I can’t fail them and I….” He shook his head. “I’m
their only child and he said he would disown me and he meant it. I could
see in his eyes that he meant it.”

“You always knew that was a possibility. You knew all along that

Kent wouldn’t be happy about this.”

“I know. I did know. I mean, knowing it and then hearing him say

what he did….”

“So what did you do, Caden?”

“Royce….”

“Tell me! Damn it, tell me you didn’t turn into a coward.”

“I … I’m not as strong as you, Royce.”

“This isn’t about me being strong.” Royce snapped. “It’s about you.

It’s about what you feel for me.”

background image

“I love you.” He pushed himself to his feet, taking a step towards

Royce, who backed away.

“And I love you.”

“We just have to keep this quiet for a while. Give me time….”

But Royce was shaking his head, hurt and disgust in his eyes. “I love

you. I will always love you. But I have kept the truth about who I am
locked away long enough and I would have waited two more years for you
to be ready to tell Kent the truth, but he knows now.”

“Please….”

“I won’t be your shameful little skeleton in the cupboard. I deserve

better.”

“I know you do.”

“But after four years, four fucking years, you are cowering out. I can

see it in your eyes. After everything you and I have been through after….”
A half sob, half laugh escaped him. “How can you do this to me? To us?
Can you really stand there and tell me you will be content to live a lie? To
please Kent? All of our dreams and plans are just nothing to you … I’m
nothing to you….”

“That isn’t true!”

“Bullshit it isn’t true. Own up to the truth. If you want me, it’s all or

nothing. And I think you’ve already chosen that it will be nothing and I
will never forgive you for that.”

Head pounding, mouth sickeningly dry, Caden opened his eyes

slowly, well aware that he had only himself to blame for the way he was
feeling. He had never been much of a drinker, but last night, that fact had
seemingly slipped his mind. Last night, he had wanted to forget, to escape,

but it hadn’t worked and he cursed under his breath as he rolled to his side,
closing his eyes again.

He knew he needed to get up, to face the web of lies that his life had

become, but at the moment, it was far easier to just lie in his bed and feel
sorry for himself.

Not that I have the right to feel sorry for myself when I made this

mess

The conversation with Royce had reminded him of that fact. Not that

he had ever forgotten. For ten years, he had lived with the regret, lived
with the guilt. In a moment of pitiful weakness, he had allowed the desire
to be what his father expected him to be to overrule what he really wanted,
and not only had he paid the price, but so had Royce.

Royce deserved better.

Royce deserved a man who could stand up to his father, a man who

wasn’t afraid to live his life on his terms. Hearing Royce’s voice
confirmed what Caden had known all along. Ten years ago, he had made
the wrong decision; ten years ago, he had taken the path of a coward and it
was time, past time for a u-turn. He didn’t stand any chance of getting
Royce back. He didn’t even allow himself to hope for that, but he could
end this charade once and for all by finally admitting that he didn’t want to
be mayor, he didn’t to be involved in politics at all and even more
importantly, he sure as hell didn’t want to marry Kelly.

Hell, most days, he didn’t want to be in the same room with Kelly.

What the hell have I been doing?

Pushing himself up on the bed, Caden winced again, but this time he

ignored the pain as he stood and made his way downstairs. First, he
needed coffee, and second, he needed a shower. And then … for the first
time in ten years, he smiled because he knew in his heart and soul that he

was about to take back his life and once he did, he would live it on his
terms.

It was a bold step, one he was terrified but proud to be taking. He

was only sorry he hadn’t done so ten years sooner.

Chapter Four

memorial, and Royce was almost ashamed to call it that, lasted less

than ten minutes and even that seemed too long. He was anxious and
uncomfortable listening to the minister’s words that were meant to provide
comfort for those struggling with grief, because Royce wasn’t feeling
grief. Not for his uncle. For years, he had hated Hank, hated everything
about him and his life and even if it was wrong, he really didn’t care that
the man was dead and gone.

The world was a better place without the drunk, abusive bastard.

“Someone should kill him.”

“Caden….”

“I mean it.”

“I know. And that’s what scares me.”

Sighing at the feel of his lover’s lips kissing the bruise Hank had left

on his shoulder during his latest rage, Royce turned to look at Caden,
clearly seeing concern in the deep blue eyes he loved.

“As soon as we graduate high school, I’ll get away from Hank.”

“That’s another year. More time for him to hurt you.”

“I’ll survive. I have a reason to, thanks to you.”

background image

“You’ll always have me.”

Wincing as the minister offered a final prayer, Royce thanked the

man and then left the cemetery without waiting to watch the waiting
workers cover the casket. He had nothing left to say to Hank Spaulding
and soon, he would have no ties left to Ashland and that was the way he
wanted it, the way he needed it. Being here hurt too much. It brought back
too many memories, and even worse, it awakened longings for what he
couldn’t have.

Life didn’t come with a rewind button. There was no going back,

only forward.

Forward without Caden.

He had been doing just that for years and he would continue to do so,

Royce assured himself as he pulled off his tie, shrugged off his jacket and
drove back to his uncle’s place. He still had more work he wanted to do
around the house, which would require another trip into town for more
supplies, but he wasn’t in the mood for that at the moment and since it was
Sunday, he doubted the hardware store would even be open. And he had
no one he wanted to see. His emotions were too raw to reasonably handle
another encounter with Kent Foster or possibly Caden or worse yet, Caden
and Kelly together, acting like the happy couple the rest of the world
believed them to be.

How Caden kept up the pretense day after day, Royce didn’t know.

He couldn’t imagine. And Kelly had to know the truth, didn’t she? Royce
was almost certain she did, which meant love wasn’t an issue for her. She
was with Caden for other reasons, all of them superficial and in Royce’s
opinion, truly sad, but if that was the life she and Caden wanted, he
couldn’t and wouldn’t stop them.

Only Caden could do that

background image

When Love Comes Back Around

33

Pulling up to his uncle’s house, he killed the engine and climbed out

of the Jeep. He hadn’t slept well the night before. Caden’s phone call had
made it impossible to shut his mind down and relax and being in his
uncle’s house didn’t help.

Too many memories and none of them good.

Stalking up the front steps, which he had already repaired the best he

could, he was fishing in his pocket for the keys to unlock the door when he
saw it. A piece of folded paper, taped to the door with his name written in
bold handwriting he easily recognized, even after ten years.

Damn you, Caden

He ripped the note off the door, intending to throw it away without

reading it. He had made his stand clear to Caden last night, but he had
always been too curious for his own damn good. Cursing again, Caden and
himself this time, he leaned one shoulder against the still closed door and
unfolded the paper.

Royce,
I  came  by  when  I  knew  you  were  at  Hank’s

funeral. I actually thought about going, but I know
you didn’t want me there. But there are some things I
need you to know.

First of all, I’m going to have a press conference

tomorrow and I plan to announce that I am dropping
out of the election and I wanted you to be the first to
know.

background image

Lisa Marie Davis

34

Second, I’m telling my father and Kelly today. I

don’t expect it to be pretty. But the thing is, I don’t care.

Not anymore.
I’ve been struggling for a long time with the lies

and half truths and living a life I don’t want, but you
coming back to town finally made me realize that I
can’t do this anymore. It’s not fair to me or the people
in this town who believe I really want to serve them.

That’s Kent’s dream. Not mine.
I lost my dream, my everything, ten years ago,

when I lost you.

I have no right to ask this again, but I’m going to,

because I’m a selfish bastard and I want to see you.

I’ll be at our special place tonight at six o’clock,

after I talk to my father and Kelly. I’m not a fool. I
know you can’t forgive me for being so stupid all those
years ago and hurting you the way I did, but I want to
see you, just for a little while.

Please, Royce. Just let me see you. I’ve missed you

so much.

And even if you don’t believe it, even if it doesn’t

mean anything anymore, I do love you.

I always will.
Caden

“Damn you, you son of a bitch.”

Blowing out an annoyed breath, he unlocked the door, but couldn’t

bring himself to step inside, turning instead to walk back to the steps
where he sat down, staring down at the letter he still held.

He couldn’t believe Caden was really going to do it. Drop out of the

race. End his relationship with Kelly. Face his father’s anger. Even if it
was too late for them, it was a big step for Caden to be taking and it
wouldn’t be easy for him, especially if Kent laid on the guilt and all the
shit about responsibilities Caden had never asked for, and there was no
doubt that Kent would indeed play that card. The man was a first class,
manipulative bastard.

After dealing with him, Caden might need a friend, someone to talk

to, someone who understood.

I’ll be at our special place tonight, at six o’clock, after I talk to my

father and Kelly.

There was only one place he could be referring to.

The lake

Closing his eyes, he didn’t bother with the token effort of telling

himself he wouldn’t be there because he knew he would be.

Smart or not, he’d meet Caden, be there for him.

Hopefully, he wouldn’t end up with another broken heart for his

efforts.

Chapter Five

“Y

 can’t do this! I won’t allow it!”

“I can and will do it and you don’t have a say in it. My mind is made

up.”

“You stupid bastard! Do you realize what you are throwing away?”

The rage in Kent Foster’s eyes matched that in his voice as he faced his
son, while Kelly stood quietly to the side, seething. “This has been in the
works for a long time, Caden. Everything in your life has been about you
running for office and beginning your career. I have worked damn hard to
make certain you have had every possible advantage and now, you’re
standing here telling me you want out, but that isn’t an option, young
man.”

Raking a hand through his hair, Caden turned away from his father,

well aware that Kelly was watching him with burning disgust. He had
intended to talk to his father first, then Kelly, but when he had arrived at
his father’s house, Kelly was already there.

She spun a story about discussing gift ideas for his upcoming

birthday, but Caden wasn’t as stupid as she and his father believed.

“It’s simple, Dad. I don’t want to be mayor. I don’t want to someday

be governor. I don’t want to be in politics.”

background image

“Young man….”

“And I don’t want to marry Kelly.”

“Excuse me? We are engaged….”

“Relax, Kelly. Even if you don’t marry me you can keep fucking my

father.”

Her audible gasp and the way her cheeks flamed would have been

fun, if the entire situation wasn’t so damn sad.  He really had been a fool
to let this lie go on for so long.

“I ... what are you talking about, Caden? I’m not....”

“Save it, Kelly. I’ve known for a while and frankly, I don’t care.”

“Well, it’s not like you’ve had any interest in me.”

“And I … hell, I would say I’m sorry, but we both know you know

the truth and have all along.”

She glared, but said nothing, turning her angry eyes to Kent, who

still stood behind his desk, trying to hold on to some control of his temper.
He was obviously furious, but Caden had expected as much. His only
surprise at his father’s reaction was his own realization that he didn’t care
if Kent was angry, if Kelly was upset. Suddenly what had once mattered
so much years ago seemed unimportant and he again cursed himself for
having been so stupid. If he had taken this stand ten years ago, he would
be with Royce now.

“Caden, be reasonable,” Kent began, voice carefully controlled.

“I am being reasonable. And I’ve made up my mind.”

“The hell you have.”

background image

Lisa Marie Davis

“I don’t expect you to understand or approve. And that’s fine….” He

shook his head. “Ten years ago, I gave in to all the demands and all the
threats and I lost the only person who has ever mattered in my life and I
don’t think I will ever forgive myself for that. But I can make changes
now. I can get my life back.”

“You mean Royce?” Kelly fired.

“I wish to God I could get Royce back, but I doubt that’s possible.”

“Don’t be a fool. Do you really believe that man is good enough for

you? He’s trash, Caden….”

“No! Don’t you dare! Don’t you dare put Royce down! He’s a better

man than you or me.”

“His uncle was a drunk son of a bitch!”

“And my father’s a bigoted asshole.”

“How dare you…!”

“I’ve got to wonder, Dad, what the real problem was ten years ago.

Me being gay? Or me loving Royce?”

“Both. And I won’t stand for either now. I won’t allow you to

disgrace this family.”

Caden shook his head, disgusted. How had this man’s opinion ever

mattered to him?

“Ten years ago, you said you would disown me, if I wanted to be

with Royce. You said I would fail you and Mom and every Foster who
lived in the past few hundred years. You said a lot of things about family
duty and how I owed you and … God, I fell hard for all of it and I have
regretted it every day since, but I’m done with regrets and lies and I am
done with you, Dad.”

background image

When Love Comes Back Around

39

“What does that mean?”

“It means I’m disowning you.”

“Caden....”

“You don’t think I’m good enough to be your son unless I live my

life on your terms? Well, I’ve realized you aren’t good enough to be my
father.”

“You have lost your mind,” Kent raged, face red, eyes blazing.

“Actually, for the first time in too damn long, I’m in my right mind.

And it feels damn good.”

Turning, he walked towards the door, pausing when he reached it to

look back at his father and Kelly, the life he was walking away from. And
he felt no regrets. Only relief.

“I’ll hold a press conference tomorrow to announce that I’m

dropping out of the election.”

“Please, Caden, reconsider....”

“I have. I reconsidered the stupid decision I made ten years ago.”

“You’re ruining your life,” Kelly said, having moved to stand beside

his father . Caden smiled.

“No. I’m taking my life back and I won’t ever give up control of it

again.”

Chapter Six

R

OYCE

arrived at the lake at fifteen minutes until six. Standing at the

shore, he watched the sun settle on the horizon.

Vivid colors painted the sky, blues and pinks and purples as a cool

breeze swept over the water. Royce drew in a deep breath, taking it all in,
remembering how he had loved this place. It was quiet and calm, seeming
safe and secluded and nicely tucked away from the rest of the world with
its problems and dramas and pain. He and Caden had always found peace
here, lost in one another, in their dreams, and Royce couldn’t deny to
himself that being here now made him ache for that kind of peace again.
More than anything, it made him ache with the need to hold Caden close
to him.

Caden, who had said he still loved him.

Had he meant that? Could Royce trust it? Had he agreed to come

here because he wanted to trust it?

He knew the answer to the last one. From the moment he had read

Caden’s letter, a hope he was reluctant to acknowledge had been building
inside of him and the odds were, that made him a fool, but he couldn’t
help himself. He still loved Caden. He’d dated in the last ten years and he
had cared about some of the men who passed through his life, but if he
were honest with himself, he hadn’t come close to loving any of them.

How could he?

He was already in love; he had given his heart to Caden when they

were sixteen and he had never gotten it back. He never would. He wasn’t
certain he wanted it back, not if there was a chance … even a slim one …
that he and Caden could finally make this work.

Closing his eyes, he stood there, surrounded by the cool and the

quiet, the memories of the past and new hopes for the future. It was a little
insane that he was willing to risk himself again, but life was about taking
risks. He had known that all along and if Caden understood as much now,
if he were finally ready to break away from his father, maybe their dreams
could still come true. Maybe Ashland had one last thing to offer him, after
all.

Opening his eyes, he kicked off his shoes and then pulled off his

socks, smiling when his bare feet sank into the cool, slightly damp grass.
Despite the coolness, he was half tempted to dive into the lake, as he and
Caden had so many times in the past.

Caden swam to him as Royce smiled and slipped into his arms,

lifting his hands to push Caden’s wet hair back from his face.

“Have I mentioned today that I love you?”

Royce lifted his bare shoulders in a shrug. “Once or twice.”

“Mind if I say it again?”

“Not at all. I kinda like hearing it.”

“In that case, I love you.”

“I love you, too, Caden. Don’t ever forget that. Nothing could make

me stop loving you.”

42

Turned out he had been right about that, Royce realized. Nothing

could end the love he felt for Caden, not even the bad decisions Caden had
made so long ago.

Heart kicking in his chest at the sound of a car coming close and

then killing its engine, Royce swallowed past a lump of emotions, but he
didn’t turn and look.

Not yet.

This moment had been ten years in the making and he didn’t want to

rush it or ruin it and he didn’t trust himself to speak without making a fool
of himself, even as the familiar voice he knew so well and had missed so
much called his name.

“Royce.”

Slowly, still barefoot, he turned and looked and his breath lodged in

his throat, seeing Caden standing a good ten feet away from him.

God, he’s perfect

Caden had always been a sight to behold, but the last decade had

been good to him. He was more beautiful than ever, with his dark hair
mussed by his hands, his long, powerful legs encased in well worn jeans
while his lightweight blue sweater accented his eyes, intense and filled
with emotions Royce could clearly see, even from a distance. All the
youthful promise had come to pass, Royce realized as Caden took two
more steps towards him and then paused, as if he were unsure or afraid.
That seemed wrong, because this was his Caden and Caden never had to
feel unsure with him.

“You came,” Caden half whispered, clearly surprised and despite

himself, Royce smiled.

“It seems I did.”

“I … I wasn’t sure you would. I mean, I couldn’t blame you, if you

didn’t.”

“It seems that I still have a hard time refusing you.” It was a

dangerous admission in some ways, but it was the truth and Royce felt the
need to say it. “Did you really do it? Tell your father you’re dropping out
of the race, that you don’t want to run for office?”

“I told him. Just a little while ago.”

“And?”

To his surprise, Caden grinned, the carefree, crooked grin Royce

remembered and loved so much that seeing it again nearly ripped his heart
right from his chest.

“He was pissed. And he yelled. A lot. And I yelled back and then I

disowned him.”

Royce raised an eyebrow. “You disowned your father?”

“Yeah. And I ended things with Kelly. Not that there was much to

end.”

“Caden....”

“She’s been sleeping with my father for a while.”

“Kent? Kelly and Kent?”

“Don’t try for a visual. It’s not an image you want floating around

your mind. Believe me.”

“God, Caden, I don’t know what to say. I’m sorry. I can’t believe

Kent would do that to you.”

Waving his hand in a dismissive gesture, Caden shook his head. “It’s

fine. I really don’t care. I don’t care if she ends up marrying my father and

background image

44

I really don’t care if either of them ever speak to me again, because I …
well, I don’t need them. I don’t want them. I can’t really believe I ever
wanted my father’s approval so badly. I guess, in some twisted way I
figured if he approved of me, that meant he loved me and I really wanted
to have my father’s love, but I know now I’ll never have it because Kent
Foster isn’t capable of loving me or anyone else, unconditionally or
otherwise.”

“Caden....”

“I screwed up, Royce. Badly. I have made so many mistakes, but

hurting you....”

“It was a long time ago.”

“Maybe. But I did hurt you and I let you down. I’m no better than

Hank.”

“That isn’t true, Caden. You’re nothing like Hank.”

“I’m not? How is what he did to you any worse than what I did?”

“I’ve never compared the two of you in my mind,” Royce assured

him, hating the pain he heard in his voice.

“I have. And I want you to know I’m sorry. So damn sorry and if I

could do it all again, it would be different.”

“What would you do?”

“I would run away with you, just like we talked about.”

“And now? What do you want now, Caden?” He heard the raw need

echoed in each word, but he didn’t care.

“Honestly? I want to touch you so badly….”

“What’s stopping you?”

background image

When Love Comes Back Around

45

He watched Caden’s eyes widen a bit, hearing that, and then, not

certain who moved first, who took the first step and not really caring, he
was suddenly held in the arms he had missed and Caden’s lips were on
his, just as eager, just as demanding as they had been the first time, so long
ago.

Bombarded by emotions, overcome with need, Royce tangled one

hand in Caden’s hair, savoring the feeling of the silken strands teasing his
fingers as Caden traced his tongue over his lips. Royce eagerly opened his
mouth. He wanted, needed more. For the first time in too many years, he
felt alive, almost on fire. He couldn’t get close enough even as Caden’s
hand roamed down his back to grip his ass possessively, grinding them
together.

Gasping at the feel of Caden’s denim covered erection pushed

against his, Royce pulled back from the kiss, to look into blue eyes that
were a shade darker with desire.

“You’re sure? Please be sure, Caden....”

“I’m sure you’re what I want. What I’ve always wanted.”

It was all the reassurance Royce needed, all he could ask for, in that

moment, as he reached for the hem of Caden’s sweater and Caden lifted
his arms wordlessly, to allow Royce to pull the garment over his head and
drop it to the ground.

“God, you’re beautiful.”

“Hardly….”

“You are.” He laid a hand on his chest, above his thundering heart.

“So damn beautiful.” Nothing had change, in that regard. If anything, he
was even more beautiful with washboard abs, perfectly defined and
smooth, taut skin and Royce wanted to taste every inch of him. He wanted
to get completely lost in their need, their desire, for one another and

looking into Caden’s eyes again, it was obvious he wanted the same.
Royce stepped back only slightly, just long enough to quickly remove his
own shirt, dropping it to the ground near his feet as Caden stepped forward
to place firm hands on his waist.

“I’ve missed you, Royce. Every damn day, I have missed you so

much.”

“Show me. Show me how much you’ve missed me.”

It was all the invitation Caden needed to kiss him again, slowly and

teasingly at first as their hands moved and sought out familiar places.
Royce pressed himself closer. He loved feeling Caden’s skin against his,
loved the feel of his hands caressing down his back even as Caden broke
the kiss to trail his lips down Royce’s neck, teeth scraping, drawing a
moan that made him chuckle just before nipping playfully at the sensitive
spot above his collarbone.

Royce shivered in reaction, fingers digging into Caden’s shoulders

and Caden laughed again, a warm and rich and wonderful sound that
washed over Royce like an ocean wave.

God, I’ve missed his laugh, his smile, everything about him and now

I have it back

The sheer emotion made his chest tight for a moment, but he drew in

a breath and smiled, sliding his hand slowly down Caden’s chest.

“Royce....”

“I need you. Now.”

“I need you, too. But I … it’s been a while...” He blushed slightly, as

he made the admission.

“You and Kelly never....”

“No. We never even kissed, beyond public displays of affection.”

“What am I going to do with you, Caden Foster?”

“I have suggestions.”

Laughing, amazed by how carefree, how right, he suddenly felt,

Royce brushed a kiss over Caden’s lips, smiling when Caden unbuttoned
his jeans and unzipped them, slipping his hand inside, to wrap his fingers
around Royce’s already painfully hard cock.

“Caden....”

All thoughts were lost as Caden kissed him again and with hands

shaking, Royce forced himself to pull away from the touch he needed and
craved long enough to push his jeans down his hips and kick them aside,
before standing in awe as Caden did the same.

In the fading light, his skin appeared almost golden, flawless, his

dark hair tangled and his eyes alive with passion. This was the man he
loved, the man he had missed, the man he would never be without again.
Feeling the ache and the emptiness of the last ten years melt away, they
came together again. Mouths fused, tongues eagerly teasing and tasting,
arms tangled, as they sank together to the cool, damp ground, driven only
by frantic need. It had been far too long since they had been here, since
they had shared this. Royce wanted to take his time and savor this
moment, but the force of their combined desire made it impossible as he
lay on his back in the grass with Caden surrounding him.

Skin damp despite the cool of the evening, Royce tangled his hands

in Caden’s hair as Caden looked down at him and he smiled.

“I love you, Caden.”

“I love you right back.”

Melting into another kiss as the sun disappeared from the sky, Royce

knew everything really would be all right.

Chapter Seven

G

OING

back to his uncle’s place was the last thing Royce wanted to do, but

it seemed the most logical choice if he and Caden wanted to be alone.

Caden assured his lover that it was fine. He didn’t care where they

spent the night as long as they spent it together, but he did understand the
reasons why Royce felt uncomfortable. His life with Hank had been pure
hell and being there reminded him of that. He had always wanted to keep
Caden as separate from that as possible. He had never admitted it, but
Caden knew some part of Royce felt ashamed when confronted with the
abuse he had endured and he was sorry for that.

He was sorry for a lot of things and somehow, someway, he would

make it all up to Royce, even if it took him the rest of his life to do it.

Exhausted but content, when they did reach the old house, they

shared a shower before settling into Royce’s old room. The bed was a little
small, but it gave them another excuse to tangle together as they drifted off
to sleep.

Caden wasn’t certain how long he slept, no more than a few hours he

was sure, when something, some faint, but disturbing noise awakened him
and he sat up slowly in bed, glancing at a still sleeping Royce.

I don’t deserve him. He has to know that

background image

49

Again, the slight scraping sound reached him and he frowned. He

knew old houses made noises all the time and he tried to tell himself he
was being foolish, to just lie back down and go to sleep, but some nagging
voice in the back of his mind whispered that something wasn’t right.

Careful not to disturb Royce, he stood, motionless for a moment,

listening and then, he caught a faint whiff of smoke.

What the hell?

Crossing the room, he opened the door, realizing the smell was

stronger in the bare instant before raging flames exploded to life in the
living room. Caden stepped back, slamming the door shut and turning as
Royce sat up in bed.

“What was...?”

“The house is on fire!”

“What the hell?”

Throwing the tangled blankets to the floor, Royce was out of bed,

but Caden blocked the path to the door.

“The fire started in the living room, I think. We can’t go that way.”

“Shit.” He raked a hand through his hair. “Window’s the only

choice.”

Caden nodded as smoke began to fill the room, billowing under the

door. He watched as Royce went to the window and tried to unlock it.

“Shit. The lock is rusted.”

Grabbing the lamp from the bedside stand, Caden pushed him out of

the way. “Watch your eyes.”

Using the base of the lamp, he slammed it into the window, wincing

as glass shattered, leaving a jagged opening.

“Here!”

Arm wrapped in a blanket from the bed, Royce knocked the rest of

the glass free just as the bedroom door cracked and Caden’s heart raced.

God, please. Please get us out of here. I can’t lose him now

“Come on. You go first.”

“Royce....”

“Don’t argue with me. Come on!”

Cursing, he went to the window that was low enough he could easily

crawl through it. Ignoring the glass that cut into his feet once he was
outside, he reached back and helped Royce to safety.

Hearing the fire hiss as it ripped through the door, Caden caught

Royce by the hand, pulling him away from the house.

“My cell is in my car. I’ll call 911. Come on, we need to get further

away.”

Royce nodded, still staring at the consuming fire as Caden pulled at

his hand and he finally followed to safer ground.

the time the firemen arrived with the police, there was nothing left of

the house to save, which didn’t matter to Royce in the least. Watching the
place go up in flames had proven cathartic, something he would share with
Caden later, as soon as they were alone. For now, with the fire out, the
ashes were crawling with fireman looking for some clue as to what had

started the blaze and Royce watched it all calmly, standing next to a fire
truck with Caden at his side.

A fireman had passed both of them blankets shortly after arriving on

the scene and for that, Royce was grateful, considering he wore only
boxers and Caden a pair of briefs.

Wincing, he realized belatedly that their attire, or lack thereof, had to

already have minds wondering.

Shit

He really didn’t care what anyone said or thought about him, but this

wasn’t fair to Caden. That thought in mind, Royce winced again as he
looked up to see the Police Chief lumbering towards them with a frown. A
short, stocky man with a shock of gray hair that seemed to go in every
direction at once, his brown eyes were coolly assessing as he stopped in
front of them, hands planted on his ample hips.

“Spaulding. Mr. Foster.”

“Chief Morgan.” As Caden spoke, his eyes narrowed. “I’m sure you

remember  Mr. Spaulding.” There was no way to mistake the hint of
annoyance in Caden’s voice as he slyly noted what he saw as the Chief’s
show of arrogant disrespect directed towards Royce. Royce smiled openly.

He really didn’t care in the least if the Chief felt compelled to be

rude or even hostile, but it amused and touched him that Caden clearly
took exception and expected better.

I’ll reward you later for that, love

“Of course,” Chief Morgan acknowledged him with a nod. “My

wife’s a big fan. Reads all your books.”

“Tell her I said thank you.”

He nodded again, casting a glance at the smoldering pile of ash that

had been a house, just a few hours ago.

“Fire Chief thinks he’s figured out the cause of your little fire.”

“Was it wiring?” It seemed a logical guesses, but Morgan shook his

head.

“No. Looks like it was arson.”

“Arson? Someone set the house on fire?” Caden asked.

“Seems so. Place was doused pretty good with gas. Looks like the

fire started in the kitchen and living room.”

“God. If I hadn’t heard….” The thought went unfinished as Morgan

looked from Caden to Royce.

“You got this place insured?”

Hearing the note of suspicion, Royce decided to ignore it as he

shrugged. “It was Hank’s, not mine, but if I had to venture a guess, I’d say
it wasn’t insured. Hank never thought about stuff like that much.”

“You inherited the place when Hank died?”

“You could say that. Hank didn’t leave a will, but lucky me, I was

his only family.”

“I see.”

“Chief, if you are trying to suggest that Royce set this place on fire,

you’re way off.”

“I’m not suggesting anything, Mr. Foster. Just gathering facts.”

“That’s fine, Chief,” Royce interjected. “I understand. You’re just

doing your job.”

background image

When Love Comes Back Around

53

“Well, along that line, I’ve got a few more questions.”

“By all means, please ask.”

“What exactly woke you up, Mr. Spaulding?”

“I did,” Caden answered easily. “I heard a noise and got up to take a

look around and saw the fire.”

“And you alerted Mr. Spaulding?”

“I did. We broke out a window in the bedroom and crawled out. I

called 911.”

“And what were you doing here so late, Mr. Foster?”

“I was sleeping.”

“Were you now?” The Chief smirked and Royce glanced at Caden,

to gauge his reaction.

“Whatever you’re thinking, Chief Morgan, I can confirm for you, if

you like.”

“Caden....” Royce placed a hand on his arm, but Caden didn’t break

eye contact with Morgan.

“No reason for that, Mr. Foster.”

“If we’ve answered all your questions, Mr. Spaulding and I would

like to go into town to find a motel so we can get some rest.”

“Of course. I’ll contact you as soon as we know more.”

“Thank you, Chief.”

The Chief nodded and Royce was well aware of the man watching

them as they walked to Caden’s car and climbed inside. When the doors
were shut, Royce turned in the seat to look at Caden. “I’m sorry....”

background image

Lisa Marie Davis

54

“For what? Royce, the fire wasn’t your fault. Someone … shit,

someone set fire to the place, knowing you had to be inside, which meant
someone was trying to hurt you, maybe even kill you, so please, don’t
apologize to me.”

“By morning, everyone in town will know you were staying the

night with me.”

“I don’t care.”

“You say that now and I believe you mean it, but this isn’t how you

wanted this to come out.”

“It doesn’t matter.” Caden reached for his hand. “I could have lost

you tonight. Forever this time. So you know what? I’m ready for the world
to know I love you and Morgan had damn well better work his ass off
finding out who set that fire.”

“You really think it was someone out to hurt me?”

“What else could it be?”

Royce looked back to where the house had stood. “I’ve got to admit

that part freaks me out a little, but the fact that the place is gone….” He
shook his head slowly. “It’s weird, but watching the house go up in flames
kind of felt like letting the really bad parts of the past go up right along
with it.” He looked back at Caden and half smiled. “Does that sound
insane?”

“Not at all. I want the bad parts of the past to not have the power to

hurt you anymore.”

“Maybe we owe a thanks to whoever torched the place.”

“I wouldn’t go that far. I still want the hide of whoever was trying to

hurt you.”

“Let the police handle it, Caden. Please.”

background image

When Love Comes Back Around

55

“Sure. But….” He shook his head, as he cranked the car. “Let’s go

find a motel. As exciting as tonight has been, I still have a ten o’clock
press conference and we need our beauty sleep.”

“We?” Royce smiled.

“Yeah. We. If we’re gonna be the talk of the town, let’s give them

something to talk about.”

Laughing, Royce leaned back against the car seat, more than certain

he and Caden could handle whatever the morning press conference and
small town gossip might throw their way. Together, Royce had no doubt
they could face anything and overcome it.

Chapter Eight

B

Y

nine thirty the following morning, a large crowd of reporters had

already gathered on City Hall steps where Caden intended to host his press
conference, but if Caden was nervous or having second thoughts, it didn’t
show.

To Royce, he seemed calm, sure of himself and his decision. He

hadn’t slept much even after they reached the motel the night before but
he didn’t appear tired, just grateful that his housekeeper hadn’t asked too
many questions when he called and requested that she bring some of his
clothes to The Cedar Inn, considering neither nor Royce had so much as a
shirt between them when they escaped the fire.

Royce had no doubt the state in which they had checked into The

Cedar Inn the night before had people already talking, fueling any gossip
started by Chief Morgan, but if Caden didn’t care, Royce saw no reason
why he should. Searching through the stack of clothing the housekeeper
had delivered, Royce found a pair of jeans and a sweater that fit well
enough. He would have to do some shopping soon, though. He was
slightly taller than Caden so most of his clothes weren’t an option. Royce
wanted to help Caden deal with the press conference and once that was
done, they could talk about their next move. Staying in Ashland for an
extended time wasn’t an option.

Royce liked the town well enough and he felt certain that most

people would accept the nature of his and Caden’s relationship, but Kent
Foster would never allow them a moment’s peace.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, lost in his thoughts, he glanced up

when he heard the bathroom door open and Caden stepped into the room.
Dressed in a dark blue three piece suit that flattered the beautiful body
beneath, he looked incredible.

“You clean up nicely, Mr. Foster.”

Caden grinned at that and shrugged. “I figure I might need to step up

a bit from last night’s attire.”

“That might be a good idea. But I liked last night’s attire.”

“So did I, to be honest.”

Standing, Royce crossed the room, taking a moment to adjust

Caden’s tie while telling himself he had no reason to be nervous.

Caden was the one who was about to make a life changing move.

“I’m not having second thoughts, Royce, and whatever the fall out, I

don’t care.”

“You mean that, don’t you?” He rested his hands on Caden’s chest,

enjoying just standing close.

“I do. I wish I had done this ten years ago....”

“Hey, we’re not gonna do that. Okay? We’re not gonna think about

time lost because we can’t change the past. All we can do is move on from
here and think about the future.”

“The future. I have to admit, that sounds good.”

“Sounds good to me, too.”

They shared a smile that said more than words, but before Royce

could lean in for the kiss he needed, Caden’s cell phone rang and he
cursed.

“Answer it.” Royce stepped back and Caden winced.

“Sorry.”

“It’s okay. We’ll turn the damn thing off when we get back from the

press conference.”

Caden smiled and answered the phone, his expression instantly

darkening. Royce watched in concern, briefly wondering if Kent had
decided to call his son in a final effort to convince him to change his mind.

“When did this happen, Chief?”

That explains it.

Royce had easily picked up on Caden’s dislike of the man the night

before and he sensed it again now, along with a new tension as Caden
cursed.

“Yeah. Thanks for letting me know. I’ll come by after my press

conference.”

Slamming the phone shut, Caden shoved it into his jacket pocket and

looked at Royce, who stepped close, placing a hand on his arm.

“Caden, what is it? What was that about?”

“They found the person who set Hank’s house on fire.”

“Who was it?”

“A guy named Mark Lewis. He was stopped for drinking and driving

early this morning.”

“Why do the police suspect he stared the fire?”

background image

When Love Comes Back Around

59

“They found gas cans and some other suspicious items and he

confessed, but that … Royce, I know who this Mark Lewis is.”

“I don’t understand....”

“He works for my father. Mark Lewis works for my father.”

“You’re saying....” He couldn’t bring himself to actually say the

words, but Caden nodded.

“My father paid Lewis to set the fire. My father was trying to kill

you.”

his shock, Caden insisted on going through with the press

conference and Royce was with him, standing slightly to the side, as
Caden took center stage before the gathered media.

If he was nervous, it didn’t show and Royce was proud of him.

“First, I would like to thank all of you for coming here today and I

would like to extend my deepest thanks to everyone in Ashland who has
backed me and supported my election efforts.”

He paused, glancing in Royce’s direction briefly, before he turned

back to the press.

“However, at this time, I would like to announce that I am

withdrawing from the race and ending my bid for the office of Mayor. I
have made this decision as I’ve realized I truly don’t belong in office.
Serving in a political position isn’t something I have a passion for and
without that passion, I would only fail to be the true champion this town
deserves.”

As expected, there was a mummer of surprise, followed by a tangled

barrage of questions.

“What is Ms. Cameron’s reaction? She isn’t here today. Does she

support this decision?”

“Ms. Cameron and I have recently parted company.”

“What about your father? He has invested a lot in the campaign.

What is his reaction?”

“I’m afraid you will have to discuss that with my father.”

“Mr. Foster, there are rumors circulating….”

Caden held up a hand. “I can only imagine the nature of the rumors.”

“It’s reported that you were at the site of a house fire last night and

the circumstances were somewhat unusual.”

“Are you involved in a same sex relationship, Mr. Foster?”

“Mr. Spaulding is here with you today. Can we assume that confirms

the nature of your relationship?”

Royce tensed slightly. He hated the direction this was headed, but he

and Caden had already discussed it and he had advised Caden to reveal
only what he was comfortable revealing. It was a big step. Royce had
lived open about his sexuality for years, but Caden had spent the last ten
years trying to live a lie, and ending that lie was hard enough without
making an announcement to the world via the media.

When Caden glanced at him again, he was surprised to see him smile

slightly, before looking to the reporters once more.

“Mr. Spaulding and I were involved years ago and we have recently

rekindled our relationship and while that is our personal business, I admit

to the relationship because I am not ashamed of it and furthermore, it has
nothing to do with my decision to drop out of the race.”

Royce released a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding as Caden

glanced at him and he smiled and nodded.

“That is all I have to say at this point and I thank you for your time.”

Those gathered continued to shout more questions, but Caden

ignored them as he went to Royce, took the hand he offered and together,
they quietly walked away.

“I

about damn time you got here.”

Ignoring his father’s obvious rage, Caden calmly sat down in the

metal chair, grateful for the scarred wooden table between them.

“Is my lawyer here yet? I expect to be out of this place within the

hour.”

“I have no idea where your lawyer is, but if I were you, I would

expect to be here for more than an hour or even two.”

“Don’t be absurd, Caden. I....”

“Don’t.” His resolve to be calm shattered, the rage too much to

control. “Don’t deny it. Not with me.”

“You can’t believe the charges....” Kent sat up straighter in his chair

with a look of outrage. “Lewis is clearly out of his mind. He’s in trouble
and looking for a way to save himself. Any fool can see that and you are
my son, so I expect you to believe me when I tell you....”

“Save it. I don’t believe a word you say, because I do know you. I

know you are ruthless and you are a bastard, and I know how you feel
about Royce and me….” He shook his head in disgust. “I can’t believe
what you think ever mattered to me. I can’t believe I ever wanted your

approval, that I wasted ten years of my life all because I was trying to
follow the path you wanted for me.”

“I only wanted what was best for you.”

“Bullshit. It was never about me. It was all about you.”

“Don’t be a fool, Caden. Don’t throw your life away.”

“My life is finally right and just so you know, I got damn lucky.”

“What   does that mean?”

“It means that Royce still loves me. He has forgiven me for being so

stupid ten years ago.”

Kent’s eyes darkened. “You can’t tell me you and that man....”

“Royce and I are together and as soon as a few more issues here are

settled, I’m moving to New York to be with him.”

“You can’t be serious.”

“I am serious. And just so you know, last night, when your pal Mark

set Hank’s house on fire, I was inside.” He set back, watching his father
pale slightly. “I heard a noise and because I did, Royce and I got out of
there in time, but it could easily have gone the other way.”

“Caden....”

“You tried to kill the man I love and I swear I will never forgive you

for that.”

“Son, it wasn’t … you have to believe me, I wasn’t trying to kill

anyone.”

“What were you trying to do?”

“I thought the fire would scare Royce, send him back to New

York….” Dejected, he raked a hand through his hair, looking almost frail,
maybe even remorseful. “Please. I never expected you would be in
danger.”

“What about Royce? What if I hadn’t been there? What if he hadn’t

woke up?”

“Son….”

“He could have died and you wouldn’t have cared.”

Standing, Caden felt no pity, no sorrow, only disgust, looking at the

man whose approval had once seemed so very important.

Ten years ago, he had made the mistake of a lifetime in an effort to

please his father, but fate and Royce had judged him worth of another
chance, a chance to get it right this time and Caden wasn’t going to blow
it.

“I’m done with you. I said that before and I’m saying it again so you

know it’s true.”

“You can’t leave me here.”

“Don’t worry. Knowing you, I’m sure you’ll buy off a judge or

something.”

“Caden….”

“I doubt you’ll rot in prison, even if that’s what you deserve. But I

can’t see Kelly standing beside you.”

“This isn’t funny,” Kent snapped, standing.

“No. It really isn’t. It’s sad. At least you are.”

He turned towards the door, opening it and not looking back when

Kent called out to him. He had said what he needed to say; he was ready
to move on and his father wasn’t part of the future he was moving
towards.

waited for Caden at the motel, telling himself it was best that he

not be anywhere near Kent Foster now or ever. He had always known the
man was ruthless, manipulative – he had certainly manipulated Caden
over the years – but arson, possible attempted murder was another matter
completely. It was proof the man would do anything to have what he
wanted and Royce was sorry for Caden’s sake. Even if he was ready to
live his life on his terms, learning how low his father was willing to sink
had to hurt.

But at least he’s free from it, at least Kent doesn’t have any more

control over him.

Sitting up on the bed at the sound of Caden’s key unlocking the

door, he allowed a comfortable silence to exist between them as Caden
crossed the room and dropped down beside him on the bed.

“I would ask how it went, but I think I can safely guess that it wasn’t

pretty.”

“He offered excuses and justifications and in his mind, he didn’t do a

damn thing wrong.”

“I can’t say I’m surprised.”

Caden looked at him, reaching for his hand as Royce stretched out

beside him. “I know. And I … God, Royce, I am so sorry.”

“Stop. You aren’t responsible for what Kent did.”

“But you could have been killed.”

“Same goes for you.”

“But it was my father….”

“Enough. I won’t let you do this. I won’t let Kent do this to us,”

Royce said, his voice firm. “Look, I don’t care what happens to Kent. All I
care about in this town, all I have ever cared about is you and I for one
think what we need to do is get on with our life.”

“Well, I don’t have any reason to stick around here. I mean, I don’t

have a job.”

“And I don’t have a place to live here.”

“Come to think of it, neither do I.” But the way he smiled made it

clear he didn’t care about that.

“However….”

“You do have a place in New York, right?”

“A great place. More than big enough for two.”

Caden smiled, pushing Royce onto the bed and easily moving to

straddle his hips. “Big bed?”

“Huge. And a hot tub.”

“Wow. Mr. Famous Writer likes the upscale.”

“I like a few of life’s luxuries here and there, but mostly, I like the

idea of sharing those things with you.”

“I want to share a lot with you, Royce. I love you so much.”

“I love you, too.”

“I have a lot that I need to make up for….”

“You could start now, by cutting out the apologies and kissing me.”

“Well, I can do that, I think.” Caden smiled, the easy, carefree smile

Royce had always loved. “But before I get down to the business of kissing
you, I just want to say thank you.”

“For what?”

“Coming home. Coming back to me. Loving me despite it all.”

Threading his fingers through silky black hair, Royce smiled.

“Loving you is easy and you’re the one who came back to me, but you
should know, I won’t ever let you go again, Mr. Foster.”

“Promise?”

“Promise. How about we seal the deal with a kiss?”

Needing no other invitation, Caden did just that.
