Campbell, a friend. David has to take the letter to 
his uncle at the house of Shaws. The story and all 
David’s problems start with this letter.

b  The lightening shows David the problem on the 

dark stairs in the house of Shaws. At the top of the 
stairs he can suddenly see. He stops because there 
are no more stairs. His uncle is trying to murder 
him.

8 a  On the first night Ebenezer Balfour is afraid of 

David. He wants David to stay in his room. On the 
second night David is afraid of his uncle because he 
tried to murder him. 

b  Ransome is the ship’s boy on the Covenant. He 

works for the officers on the ship. He is happy 
and works hard. But the first officer, Mr Shuan, is 
dangerous when he drinks. He often hits the boy. 
One day he hits the boy too hard and kills him.

important in this story. Friends will help you, but 
the other men will kill you.

b  Riach is talking to the captain and the other officers 

on the ship. They want to kill Alan Breck, but he 
is in the roundhouse with the ship’s guns. They say 
that David can go to the roundhouse and get the 
guns. Then they can murder Alan Breck easily.

c  Alan Breck is talking to David after the fight in the 

roundhouse. David is now Alan’s friend. David will 
have the button from Alan’s coat. Alan’s friends and 
clansmen will know it and will always help David. 
This is important later in the story.

d  Alan Breck is talking to David. Alan is carrying a 

lot of money. It is money from the clansmen in 
Scotland for his chieftain, Ardshiel, in France.

16  They want the guns from the roundhouse. Then 

they can murder Alan Breck.

b  Alan’s French coat with its buttons is famous. A 

man with a button from that coat is a friend of 
Alan Breck. 

c  Captain Hoseason can’t take Alan Breck to 

France, but he can take him to Linnhe Loch in 
Scotland – for a lot of money. After the fight in the 
roundhouse the captain only wants Alan to leave 
the ship.

d  The Campbells are Scottish people but they helped 

King George. They took the land from Ardshiel and 
his clansmen. They make life dangerous for Alan 
Breck and his friends. The Red Fox is a Campbell.

e  The colours of Highland clothes show a man’s  

clan. King George and his soldiers want to end the 
clans. So the clansmen can’t wear their Highland 
clothes.

because he is very ill. She takes Alan and David 
across the River Forth into Stirling in her father’s 
boat. The soldiers on the bridge don’t see them.

c  The man in the next office to Mr Rankeillor goes 

with David and Alan and Mr Rankeillor to the 
house of Shaws. He hears Ebenezer Balfour, so he 
can put his name on the papers.

25  a  David’s father, Alexander, was the older brother. 

He and his brother Ebenezer fell in love with the 
same girl. She married Alexander and Ebenezer was 
very angry. He said and did bad things. Alexander 
and his wife went away. Alexander left the house of 
Shaws to his bad younger brother.

b  Ebenezer wanted David to go away. He was afraid 

of him. First he tried to murder him. Then he paid 
twenty pounds to Captain Hoseason and Hoseason 
kidnapped David. 

c  David’s uncle tried to murder him. He kidnapped 

him and sent him out to sea. Now Mr Rankeillor 
knows this. Ebenezer can do nothing. David can 
have the house and the things in it.
