PRESS QUOTES:

"[Matthews] has an innate sense of what works and he
gives each song exactly what it needs......full rich
melodies and enticingly cryptic lyrics.....a very welcome
return".

NPR "All Things Considered"

"Matthews spares no effort in orchestrating his
beautiful constructions, augmenting them with strings,
organs, and other 'real' instruments that have been all
too scarce in pop music since the Beatles and Nick
Drake perfected the genre."

Entertainment Weekly

“For the past decade or so, it’s been hip to use terms
like orchestral pop, and drop ‘auteur’ names like Brian
Wilson or Jimmy Webb. Eric Matthews was there first,
and does it best… Simply exquisite.”

MOJO

"It is not classic or alternative rock, but classical rock,
informed by Brahms and Brian Wilson, Rachmaninoff
and David Sylvian. Eric Matthews is a pop rarity…”

New York Times

This one is different.

This time there is something new that

greatly contributes to the special nature of the way this album
sounds.    On  this  album,  the  core  sound  is  that  of  the  standard
rock combo augmented by piano, brass, and woodwind
instruments. But that’s not what’s different.  On this album, for
the first time, Matthews is heard playing all of the instruments,
including drums and a few others he has never played on his
own albums. Some of his heroes, like Stevie Wonder and Paul
McCartney, had done it and Matthews felt inspired to take on the
same ambitious challenge.  Not to show off, prove a point, or any
of the darker motivations, but instead as a service to the songs
and to the sound he wanted to achieve, free of outside influence
or guest-star nuance. Intending to better define this particular set
of songs, this one is different because this time, it’s pure Eric
Matthews at his very best!

Matthews made his recording debut in 1994 as one half of the legendary

duo,

Cardinal (Flydaddy Records

), with Australian-born

singer/songwriter,

 Richard Davies

(best known for fronting the cult

band,

 The Moles

). Although internal conflicts forced a split (much to the

dismay of their loyal fans), both Davies and Matthews went on to find

success in solo careers. Matthews joined with

 Sub Pop

to release two

critically acclaimed albums,

 It's Heavy in Here

(1995) and

 Lateness of

the Hour

(1997), and after a six year hiatus, began recording

 Six Kinds

of Passion looking for an Exit

released by

 Empyrean

in 2005.
