ABB
current sensor

C

urrent sensors are fundamental

measuring components that generate
a signal that is in proportion to the
current to be measured. This very
accurate signal is transmitted to
the equipment. It is the essential
information needed to ensure optimal
system control as well as protection
of equipment and staff. The NCS
current sensor is the result of a
number of ABB innovations and can
measure both AC and DC currents.

Engineering

Greater
measuring
flexibility

D

esigned to meet the constraints of a

variety of industrial sectors such as speed
controllers, UPSs, wind generators,
welding machine, electrolysis… and
hostile environments
such as sub-stations,
the NCS sensor offers
a wide measurement
range: from 2kA
to 50kA.

THE NCS MEETS ALL OF YOUR REQUIREMENTS

without constraints

You decide
what to measure

T

he innovative NCS

sensor has many
advantages. It has been
designed to leave you
free to choose your type
of output: current or
voltage. It is equipped
with up to 4 measurement
signals to enable you to make
considerable savings; its 100%
electronic design and available
slots for additional functions mean you
are prepared for future developments.
The flange kit supplied as an option with the
NCS sensor gives easy assembly and integration
into items of equipment while reducing the space
they require. This is how ABB tailor each component to
your requirements.
Virtually tailor-made...

ELECTRONIC

electronic

T

he main advantage of the NCS range of

sensors is that they are designed using a
brand-new solution: 100% electronic
technology. Unlike other currently
available solutions such as shunts and
CTs, this approach means that these
sensors are very compact. Several
patents were necessary to achieve this
improvement.

100%

the difference

T

he NCS sensor is entirely symmetrical.

Its square shape and strategically
positioned oblong holes make it easy to
fasten in a choice of 2 positions. It comes
with a pair of flanges that can be fastened
on either side of the sensor giving complete
fitting flexibility. It meets the standard
design of ABB current sensors.
It can be fitted both horizontally and
vertically. This flexibility means that NCS
sensors can be fitted in any position and
simplifies the work of integrators.
The NCS sensor also comes with a flange
kit that means it can be fastened to one
or more bars at the same time.

Designed to be
integrated into
every situation

125

background image

T

he flange kit supplied as an

option with the NCS sensor
gives considerable latitude in
installations whether you are
fastening it to a frame or to one
or more bars. The NCS sensor
is easier to integrate into systems
while reducing their overall
dimensions.

Wide adjustment range

Considerable energy
saving

T

he NCS sensor gives considerable energy saving. There

is therefore no increase in temperature around the sensor.
Unlike standard sensors that require a power supply of
several hundred watts, the NCS sensor operates on only
a few watts.

Protecting
the environment

Complying with
safety standards

F

or ABB protecting the environment is

a genuine priority, as witness our
ISO 14001 certification in 1998.
This environmentally friendly approach
is reflected in the NCS range by the
reduced number of components, a
low-energy manufacturing procedure,
and the use of recyclable packing.

T

he NCS range has been designed in

compliance with industrial standards
EN 50178, sub-station standards EN 50123-1
and safety standards EN 50124-1.
Regarding electromagnetic compatibility,
the NCS complies with industrial standards
EN 61000-6-2 and EN 61000-6-4 as well
as sub-station standards EN 50121-5.

2 additional advantages

in a system

T

he size and weight of the NCS sensor are major advantages

compared with the other solutions currently available such as
shunts or CTs. In the face of increasing miniaturisation, the NCS
range adapts more easily than other contemporary solutions.
The NCS sensor is now available in 2 sizes, i.e. with a 125mm
or 165mm width aperture.
