RUBRIC:

Welcome to the London Tests of English Level A1. The theme of this test is
Going to the Doctor. The test lasts one hour and fifteen minutes. There are
five tasks. Tasks One and Two are listening. You must listen to the tape and
write your answers in this booklet. Good luck!

Task One:

Alex Helps His Sister

Alex is helping his sister, Lucy. Listen to the conversation, read the
questions and look at the pictures. For each question, put a cross in the
box below the correct picture, as in the example.

You will hear the conversation twice. Do as much as you can the first time
and finish your work the second time.

You have one minute to read the questions and look at the pictures.

[ONE MINUTE PAUSE]

Listen carefully. The conversation starts now.

[TONE BEEP]

[FIVE SECOND PAUSE]

Lucy:

Alex!  Alex!  Can you help, please?

Alex:

OK.  Where are you, Lucy?  In the garden?  In your bedroom?

Lucy:

No, I’m in the kitchen. I’m going to make something.

Alex:

Oh. What?

Lucy:

A cake. Your cakes are nice, so can you help me, please?

Alex:

OK. But let’s have some tea and biscuits first. So, Lucy, who is the cake for?

Aunt Mary?

Lucy:

No, it’s for my friend, Ann.  It’s her birthday, the eleventh of November.

Alex:

Oh yes. How old is she? Twelve like you?

Lucy:

No, she’s thirteen now. I’m making a cake for her party this evening.

Alex:

What!  It’s a quarter past four already.

Lucy:

Yes, but her party starts at seven.

Alex:

Oh, that’s good because at six I want to watch a TV programme.  It’s about my

favourite guitar player.

Lucy:

OK, then, let’s get started! First, give me the big cookery book.

Alex:

Where is it? I can’t see it in the book-case. And it’s not on the table.

Lucy:

Look, there it is. On mum’s chair.

Alex:

Oh yes! Here you are! There’s a good birthday cake on page 20.

Lucy:

Page twenty? OK.  We need butter, sugar, eggs…

Alex:

Eggs?  How many eggs?  We’ve only got 5 in the fridge.

Lucy:

It’s OK .  We need 3 large eggs or 4 small ones.

Alex:

Oh, the water’s ready.  I can make the tea now.

Lucy:

Be careful, Alex!  That’s hot water!

Alex:

Ow!  My foot!  It really hurts!

Lucy:

Are you OK, Alex?  Shall I phone mum?

Alex:

It’s OK. Don’t phone Mum at school. She finishes teaching at four and she gets

home at five.  She can look at my foot then.  And I don’t need to go to the

hospital.

Lucy:

Are you sure? So, let’s start the cake.
