 Use this free crochet afghan pattern for a 
warm night next to the fire. Super Saver 
yarn makes it nice and warm. This pattern 
calls for a J hook. 

 

Afghan measures 52½" x 64½". 

RED HEART® "Super Saver®": 2 Skeins 
931 Seagrass A, 1 skein 320 Cornmeal B, 2 
skeins 505 Aruba Sea C, 3 skeins 631 Light

Materials: 

 

Crochet Hook: 6mm [US J-10].

Granny Square Crib Afghan

This granny square crib Afghan is a great 
free crochet pattern. The bright colors will 
light up the room and make you feel at 
home. Make this crochet Afghan for your 
own child or for a grandchild. 

 

Materials: 

 

Knitting worsted, 7 oz each of three 
colors; e.g., bright pink (color A), 
yellow (color B), purple (color C). 
Crochet hook, size F or size required 
for gauge.  

 

Gauge: Each square measures 3” per 
side. 

 

This afghan is made with three sets 
of granny squares and three sets of 
crocheted shells in between, with a 
picot edging. 

  

Instructions: 

Center Strip: Make 5 squares as follows: 
With A, ch 6 and join to form center ring. 
 
Round 1: Ch 3, work 2dc in ring, (ch 1, 3dc 
shell in ring) 3 times; ch 1. Join with slip 
stitch to top of ch 3. Break off. 
 
Round 2: With B, slip stitch in any ch 1 
space and ch 3. In same space, work 2dc, ch 
1, 3dc (first corner). (Ch 1; in next space 
work 3dc, ch 1, 3dc) three times (3 other 
corners). Ch 1 and join with slip stitch to top 
of ch 3; slip stitch in next 2 dc and in ch 1 
space. 
 
Round 3: Ch 3; in same space work 2dc, ch 
1, 3 dc. (Ch 1, 3dc shell in next ch 1 space, 
ch 1, work corner in next corner space) three 
times. Ch 1, shell in next ch 1 space, ch 1, 
join with slip stitch and break off. 
 
Join these squares by whipstitching them 
together until they form one long strip. 
 
One-color border around strip:  
 
Round 1: Slip stitch with C in a corner 
space at the beginning of a long side of the 
finished strip. Work a 1st corner in that 
space. *(Ch 1, work shell in next ch 1 space) 
twice; ch 1, work shell in joining between 
first two squares.* Repeat from * to next 
corner; ch 1, work corner in that corner 
space, and continue in that manner around 
the perimeter of the strip. Join to top of 
starting ch 3; slip stitch into next 2dc and ch 
1 space. 
 
Round 2 through 7: Ch 3, work 1st corner 
in that corner space; continue around as in 
Round 1. When you have completed Round 
7, join with slip stitch and break off. 
 
Inner border of squares: 
Make 24 squares in the same manner as the

Center Strip squares, using color B for 
Round 1, C for Round 2, and A for Round 3. 
Join 2 strips of 7 squares each, and 2 strips 
of 5 squares each, in the same manner as the 
Center Strip. Using a whipstitch, join the 
longer strips to the long sides of the One-
color border and the shorter strips to the 
ends. Then whip stitch the corner squares 
together. 
 
Two-color border: 
 
Slip stitch color B to any corner of the [so 
far] finished work. Work one round, in the 
same manner as Round 1 of the One-color 
border. Break off. 
 
Work 5 Rounds in Color A and one more 
Round in color B. Break off. (7 Rounds 
altogether) 
 
Outer border of squares: 
 
Make 40 squares in the same manner as all 
the other squares, using color B for Round 1, 
A for Round 2, and C for Round 3. Join 2 
strips of 9 squares each and 2 strips of 11 
squares each, in the same manner as above. 
Whipstitch the strips in the same manner as 
for the Inner border.  
 
Finishing: 
 
Slip stitch with B in any corner space and 
work two rounds in the same manner as 
Round 1 of the One-color border. DO NOT 
BREAK OFF. 
 
Ch 4, sc in 4th ch from hook (picot). Sc in

2nd sc in corner of ajoining motif. 1 sc) all

st to next sc of ajoining motif. 1 sc in next 
ch 1 sp) twice. 1 sc in each of next 3 dc. Rep

Join Motifs in Throw, having 9 Motifs wide 
and 11 Motifs long. 

Tassel: (make 4). Cut a piece of cardboard 
4½ ins 11 cm wide. Wind A around 
cardboard 30 times. Break yarn leaving a 
long end and thread end through a needle. 
Slip needle through all loops and tie tightly. 
Remove cardboard and wind yarn tightly 
around loops ¾ inch 2 cm below fold. 
Fasten securely. Cut through rem loops and 
trim ends evenly. Sew tassels at each corner
