The `Comparing' Question Track

TEACHERS NOTES

LANGUAGE PRACTISED

This track practises the use of comparatives, for example, Are you taller than Asif? No I'm much shorter/Yes I am a little taller.

The questions in the track could be answered by a simple Yes I am/No I'm not, etc. and this may be appropriate initially but when pupils/students are confident using the activity they should be encouraged to use longer answers.

For example

Question: Are your shoes bigger than mine?

Short answer: Yes they are.

Long answer: Yes they are much bigger. Or, Yes they are two sizes bigger.

The track is designed so that pupils/students can ask questions comparing themselves to other people in the class/group or to people they all know.

MATERIALS REQUIRED

• The `Comparing' track (either enlarged to A3 for group use or an A4 track for each player)

• A dice and some counters

PLAYING THE GAME

• This is an activity for two to four players.

• Players take it in turn to throw a dice and move their counters round the track.

• After each move the players make up a question starting with the phrase in the square they have landed on.

• The next person must answer the question before they can throw the dice.

• PENALTY - If a player cannot ask an appropriate question s/he must move BACK the number of squares shown on the next throw of the dice.

Is your arm longer than…?	Is your tongue longer than…?	Is your hand bigger than…?
Rules Throw a dice. Move your counter. Ask the next person a question starting with the words in the square you have landed on. If they can answer the question they can throw the dice.		Is your hair shorter than…?
				Are you happier than…?
Are you louder than…?	Are you quieter than…?	Is your hair longer than…?
Are you younger than…?
Are you older than…?
Are you shorter than…?	Are you taller than…?	start
