TOPIC / THEME: Speed Development with Change of Direction

OBJECTIVE OF PRACTICE:

  • To develop the players quick footwork and change of direction skills

ORGANISATION:

0x01 graphic

  • 10 cones set up as per diagram

  • 12 - 18 players

  • Players walk into the 1st cone, no standing starts

  • Players run to at an angel from the 1st cone and changes direction to the 2nd cone

  • All players must walk back

  • Work / rest ratio is 1:5

  • 3 - 5 reps per set

  • 1 - 2 sets per session

  • 2 minutes rest between sets

KEY OBSERVATION FACTORS:

  1. Use short steps

  2. Drop the shoulder and flex the knees when changing direction

  3. Drive off the outside leg to change direction

  4. Maintain good arm mechanics

NOTES:

  • Arms mechanics are as vital in lateral movements as they are in linear movements.
