What is an idiom ?

An idiom – is sommonly used expression

whose meaning does not realte to literal

meaning of its words.

Idioms are classified as figurative

language, which is an use in an unsual or

imaginative manner

Why we should be careful

when we translate the

idioms?



We can't translate them literally because we

can make the statements funny and unclear.

Idioms are more often used in the colloqual

speech, songs and everyday language. People

know what they mean although they do not

make sense. Some part of them have

equivalent in polish e.g.

Gentle as a dove – łagodny jak baranek
Don't be a chicken – nie bądź tchórzem



and other don't, e.g.

Hot-footed – spieszyć się
three sheets to the wind – upić się
