Track

Speaker 1
My name is unusual but I must say I like it because it’s
original. Unfortunately it’s also long and people always
ask me to spell it because they have never heard it before
and they have no idea what name to put down. In fact I’ve
got used to that and when I say my name to a new person
I automatically start spelling it. So it is a problem for me,
but I have never thought about changing it.

Speaker 2
When I talk to people they often ask what it’s like living
with such an unusual name, but I can’t complain really.
I have never been bothered because of that. And there
are also good sides. When I introduce myself my name
always makes people interested. They ask who came up
with it, they say they have never heard it before, so it’s
a great topic to start a conversation, break the ice with
strangers. And I got to know a few people I’m really close
to nowadays because of that name.

Speaker 3
People who have unusual names often talk about
different problems and bullying in childhood but for me it
has never been a problem. Of course sometimes I have to
repeat it a few times but I also noticed it’s an advantage.
When people meet another Susan or Jack they tend to
forget the name and the person and in my case they
often associate the unusual name with me so in a way I’m
unforgettable.

Speaker 4
Nowadays I’m quite happy with my name because it
sounds original but I hated it throughout my childhood
and I hated my parents for giving it to me. My schoolmates
often made fun of me and it was much more difficult for
me to make friends. You know what it’s like being different
when you are 7 or 10 years old. When I was a teenager
I even considered changing it to Jack or Frank, but now
I’m happy I didn’t.

Speaker 5
It’s a long tradition in my family to call the first son Josh
and it’s not the name, really, that bothered me, but when
we meet at Christmas, and that’s usually about 30 people,
the house is full of Joshes. And that really got on my
nerves for years. I didn’t want to be another Josh because
it felt like being nobody. So just after my 18

th

 birthday

I decided to do something about it. Now I’m Jermaine and
I feel much better. Of course, my parents were angry for
a few months but then they accepted it.
