A Day in Barcelona

1

If you only have one day to spend in Barcelona, you have
to start in the oldest part, known as the Old City, to see
Barcelona’s most famous historic monuments, narrow
streets, lovely atmospheric bookshops and restaurants. If
you wander through the ancient old streets, you will come
to the Cathedral of Santa Eulalia, which dates back to the
13th century. Next you should visit the Palau Reial Major
– the palace where the Catalan kings lived. From there
you can go to see the Esgl`

esia de Santa Maria del Mar –

the most beautiful Gothic church in Barcelona.

2

Not far from the church, at the Museo Picasso, is one of
the biggest collections of artworks by the Spanish artist.
The museum opened in 1963 with a collection of paintings
which Picasso had given to his friend Jaime Sabartés. The
friend wanted to open a museum in Malaga, where Picasso
was born, but the artist himself chose Barcelona. The
collection began with 574 works, but now there are about
1000 works, many of which were given to the museum by
the artist himself.

3

Lovers of architecture must see the magnificent building
of the Sagrada Familia, a church designed by Antoni
Gaudí. Though the artist died in 1926, the famous
building is not finished yet. Gaudí’s work was initially
heavily influenced by the Gothic style. People from all
over the world come to see other examples of Gaudí’s
work, such as La Pedrera or Casa Batllò. A very special
place to go is Park Güell with a world famous colourful
mosaic of a dragon. The park, together with other works
by Gaudí, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

4

You cannot go home without a souvenir from Barcelona,
and the best place to buy one is Las Ramblas, which
is a network of narrow streets, full of little shops and
cafés. While you walk around, you can see lots of live
performances and shows. If you get to the Rambla de
Mar and you walk to the end, you will see the port of
Barcelona with a giant figure of Columbus looking out
towards the Mediterranean Sea.

Police officer  So, Mr Roberts, could you tell us what

you were doing yesterday between
6.30 p.m. and 11.00 p.m.?

Mr Roberts

Well, nothing really. I think I just had my
dinner, watched TV and went to sleep.

Police officer Oh really? 1

.

Mr Roberts

I don’t think so. I live alone.

Police officer  You mean to say that you didn’t leave

home last night.

Mr Roberts

No, I didn’t. Oh, maybe I did, but just for
a very short time.

Police officer  So you remember. Good. Because your

neighbour saw you leaving the house at
about seven o’clock. 2

.

Mr Roberts

To the petrol station to buy some
cigarettes.

Police officer  3

.

Mr Roberts

Nothing. I went home.

Police officer  That’s very strange. 4

.

Mr Roberts

I think I know the face. He works for the
petrol station, I think.

Police officer  Yes, he does. And he saw you leaving the

station in a black Volvo with three other
men. Is that possible?

And what happened next?

Do you know the man in this photograph?

And how much time did you spend there?

Did anybody see you?

Where did you go?

Dear Tom
Just a quick mail to let you know that I can’t
come to you concert on Saturday. I’m really
sorry. I’d love to come but I have to go with
my parents to visit my grandma. It’s her 80th

you’ll be a great success!
Alice

Hi Alice
Pity you couldn’t come but you’ll make it
another time. The concert was really good.
The problem is I forgot what to do for
the biology class. I just remember it was
something unusual. I’m sure you know what.
Write to me please.
