Walking

Corsica will captivate those who enjoy walking
or serious hiking. With impressively high peaks,
breathtaking scenery and unspoilt countryside, the
island can be greatly appreciated on foot and there
are a wealth of marked trails across the island to suit
all levels of walkers.

In partnership with a couple of Corsican walking
specialists, we have carefully hand-picked a selection
of self-guided itineraries which encompass some
of the best walking on the island: granite mountains,
tumbling mountain rivers, ancient Genoese bridges,
dazzling seascapes and UNESCO World Heritage
site in the Gulf of Porto.

The island can be particularly challenging for walkers
so it is important to choose the right itinerary
according to your level of fi tness and experience.

Discover some of the most beautiful corners
of Corsica with our walking holidays.

The following pages showcase our self-guided
itineraries, which include some of the most
interesting routes in Corsica. The walks are
generally on good footpaths and trails, albeit the
terrain is often rocky with many undulating sections
so you need to be used to walking all day, be
confi dent at altitude and take regular exercise to
enjoy these holidays.

Why self-guided walking?

You can walk at your own pace, choosing when and
where to stop. We provide maps and good walking
notes and where indicated, we transport your bags
between the hotels. There are often other walkers
on the same itinerary that you will bump into along
the way, however this is a way of enjoying complete
fl exibility, you dictate the walking pace and rhythm
of your holiday.

Gr20

The internationally renowned GR20 trail is
one of the most technical and diffi cult long
distance walks in Europe. Crossing Corsica
from northwest to southeast, the GR20 is
170 kilometres long with an average altitude

of between 1000m and 2000m. It starts in
Calenzana in la Balagne region and fi nishes in
Conca near Porto Vecchio, and in its entirety it
takes approximately two weeks to complete.

background image

Day 1:

Fly to Calvi

Depending on your arrival time you may have the opportunity to settle into your room and
perhaps see a little of Calvi before your evening meal. On the fi rst evening your leaders will
explain more about the walks and there will be plenty of time to meet your fellow guests.

Day 2:

L'ile Rousse

On the fi rst day's walks you head to the charming town of L'Ile Rousse with its port and attractive
seafront. Easier walks begin by taking in the charm of Sant'Antonio, a hilltop village in the heart
of la Balagne region, whereas harder walkers make their way through pleasant farmland to the
artisan village of Pigna.

Day 3:

Bonifato to Calenzana

Today you head to Bonifato. From here both groups cross the Figarella River to join the famous
Mare e Monti long distance path. This route is dramatic with far reaching views to the mountains.

Day 4:

speloncato to santa-Reparata-di-Balagna

Both groups make their way up the winding road to the lofty hilltop town of Speloncato,
which is perched high upon a rocky outcrop with an impressive backdrop of mountains to
its southeast. On the easier walk, you set off through the town's alleyways and tunnels to
the viewpoint onto the rock on which the town sits, whilst the harder walk makes its way to

On the free day you may wish to enjoy a leisurely lunch by Calvi's scenic seafront and spend
an afternoon on its beautiful beach, visit Calvi's bustling market, or visit the well preserved

Day 6:

Lumio

The easier walk offers the villages of the Balagne, viewed at their best as we walk through the
picturesque countryside amongst oleander, bougainvillaea and fruit trees. The harder walk begins
from the Convent Corbara, with fi ne views to the hilltop town of Sant'Antonino, the jewel in the
crown of la Balagne. From its lookout point, the walk unfolds before you and you can see the
valley and peak en route to your destination of Lumio.

Day 7:

Calvi to the Revellata headland

Both walks head out on foot from the hotel to Notre Dame de la Serra Chapel situated high above
Calvi. From there you take in the breathtaking scenery including the headland of Revellata.

For those with enough determination and stamina,
the views from some of the coastal roads and
mountain tracks are breathtaking, though the
mountainous terrain with climbs and winding roads
can make cycling a challenging option.

The best time for exploring the island on two
wheels is during mid-season: May-June and
September-October, when the weather is slightly
cooler and the roads quieter. Opt for road cycling
along the Cap Corse or the Calanches de Piana and
be rewarded by some of the island's outstanding
views, or escape the traffi c completely and venture
off road...

There are numerous footpaths, woodland trails and
1,900 kilometres of bridleways which will enable
you to discover more of the island's natural beauty,
the best of which are near Forêt de l'Ospedale,
Bavella and the Coscione Plateau in the south.
There is also a coastal path between St Florent
and L'Ile Rousse which provides cyclists with views
of some of the island's most outstanding scenery.
The Mare e Monti Sud hiking path which runs
between Propriano and Porticcio is one of the
island's best opportunities for mountain biking as are
the tracks of coastal Sartenais.

We can carry your bike free of charge on our
Stansted-Calvi charter flight or alternatively, you
can hire a road or mountain bike in most major
resorts locally, including Ajaccio, Bastia, Calvi, Porto
or Propriano.

For those looking for a dedicated cycling holiday to
see more of the island we can offer the following
itineraries which include bike provision and a
luggage-transfer service.

in Corsica

Cycling

The Tour de France of 2013 certainly revealed how spectacular
Corsica is as a cycling destination – and it’s certainly opened the
island up in terms of attracting cyclists – from interested novices to
the most hardened professional.

8 DAY holIDAY | GUiDED CyCLiNG ToUR

background image

The following information is specific to our walking
and cycling tours, however this should be read in
conjunction with our main Corsica 2015 brochure
where you will find information about flights,
accommodation, our fair trading charter and an
A to Z of Things to Know before you go.

Luggage

On our walking and cycling trips, we offer a luggage
moving service enabling you to travel light while
you walk/cycle, just taking with you what you need
for the day. Your main luggage will be transported
by vehicle between the different night stops by a
variety of different people. This ranges from local
taxis, hotel owners and our own staff. We ask you
to please limit your main luggage to around 15kg
per bag to facilitate the driver loading it in and out
of the vehicle. It is important to know it is necessary
to carry your own bags at the start and end of your
holiday, as well as during trip where train and/or bus
journeys are required. Please note that the vehicles
transferring the luggage cannot, in most cases,
carry passengers.

meals

Breakfasts are continental style. Evening meals
are three course affairs using local produce. We
recommend you bring your preferred trail food, or
high energy bars/gels. Picnics can be purchased daily
from bakers or small supermarkets. Please ensure
you make us aware of any dietery requirements at
the time of booking.

spending money

Bring sufficient to cover your personal expenses
including snacks and drinks. Bottled water, soft
drinks, beer, wine and coffee are all expensive.
It is impossible to change money in rural parts of
Corsica and trying to find a working cash machine
can be problematic. We recommend bringing all the
Euros you need with you in cash.

to know

Things

Climate

You can expect to encounter some very wide
ranging temperatures. During the walks/cycles you
should be ready for everything, take powerful sun
protection, as well as warm fleeces and a Gore-tex
wind jacket. Corsica is known for its micro climates
and each valley can be very different. The weather
can change quickly and the mountains generate
some stormy, often unpredictable weather.

preparing for your walking trip

It is a good idea to get fit for walking trips. The more
time you put in before you leave, the more you
will get out of the walking. You should do regular
aerobic exercise in preparation for the hills. Walking
regularly with a rucksack is the best way to make
sure you are fit enough for the Corsican hills and
enjoy the trip to the fullest.

What to bring – walking

•  A small day pack for your water bottle, camera,

picnic and waterproof.

•  A rucksack or suitcase for your main luggage

15kg maximum per person

•  Good walking shoes or boots with a good

grip sole

•  Walking socks
•  Warm fleece
•  Shorts and t-shirts
•  Swimwear & towel
•  Two walking poles (optional)
•  Water bottle (one litre minimum)
•  For your picnics: A good cutting knife, fork,

spoon, plastic cup and plate, some plastic bags

•  Sunglasses, sun cream & sun hat
•  Wind and waterproof jacket (Gore-tex style)
•  Trainers or open sandals
•  Personal first-aid kit

preparing for your cycling trip

Be aware that ALL cycling on Corsica includes some
hills so be prepared to do some climbing! A good
level of fi tness and stamina, plus regular cycle riding
will be essential.

Bringing your own bike

We recommend customers bringing their own bikes
should have them serviced before their holiday to
ensure their bike is in good working order. Bike shops
are few and far between on the island, so it is advisable
to bring some spares of various items if you think you
might need them and carry any necessary tools.

hiring a bike

Bikes and route notes will be delivered on the
morning of the fi rst day of cycling. We suggest the
bikes are checked each morning before you start to
ride – check the tyres, brakes and make sure there
are no loose components. Although it very rarely
happens, you are expected to be able to mend your
own punctures.

hybrid bikes

These are a French brand which are sturdy, solid and
reliable and will defi nitely get you up those hills! They
have an aluminium frame, 21 gears (shimano) and a
comfortable Selle Royal saddle. They come in both
men’s and ladies’ versions. Hybrid bikes are provided
with a helmet, double back panniers, a handlebar bag
(sometimes one between two), puncture repair kit,
pump and a bike lock. Men’s versions have a water
bottle cage, women’s versions do not, but a water
bottle can be carried in the panniers.

Road bikes

We use the 'Specialized' brand – mainly Specialized
Allez Sport. They all have drop handle bars, provided
with helmets, puncture repair kit, pump and bike
lock and fl at pedals. You are welcome to bring your
own pedals and shoes should you wish to use cleats,
however we recommend you bring your own tools
for fi tting your own pedals. NB: Panniers are not
provided with road bikes, so please ensure you bring a
suitable day sack.

safety on the roads

Please note our cycling trips take place on roads
open to traffi c so customers should be competent
on the road and they should not cycle at night.
Whilst it is not a legal requirement to wear a
helmet, we request all clients wear a helmet at all
times when cycling.
