Origin  

Angles of 3rd through 6th ribs 

Insertion  

Posterior tubercles of transverse 
processes of 4th, 5th, and 6th cervical 
vertebrae 

Actions  

Bilaterally, superficial erector spinae 
extend the spine 
Unilaterally, iliocostalis and longissimus 
laterally flex (side bend) and rotate to the 
opposite side. 

Nerve  

Lateral branches of the dorsal primary 
division of the spinal nerves
