Campaign 2 

 

 

End of course test: Speaking 

Time allowed: 10–12 minutes 

 
 
Ensure that students are au fait with the structure and format of the end of course speaking 
test at least a week in advance of the test itself. 
 
Task 1 (Prepared Briefing Introduction) 
Ask students to give a 5 minute introduction to a briefing on a multinational exercise. 
 
(This should be prepared at home. You may wish to encourage students to use any available 
equipment during their presentation. Unit 8, delta will be of help as a reference point. ) 
 
You may want to mark student performance on some of the following. 
1 Personal introduction, function 
2 Structure of briefing –  type, security classification, approximate timings, question protocol, 
etc. 
3 Language –  appropriacy, level, style   
4 Delivery – pronunciation, vocal clarity etc. 
 
(Note that those elements you choose to assess should be made clear to students.) 
 
Task 1 could be carried out over 1 or 2 lessons depending on the size of your class.  
Mark this part out of 50. 
 
 
Task 2 (General Conversation) 
Engage the candidate in general conversation on an everyday topic such as work, family, and 
hobbies for 2–3 minutes. Prepare a series of questions and ensure that candidates are asked 
the same questions for any given topic. 
 
Choose the topic(s) from any of the units in Campaign 2, perhaps focussing on the Functional 
English sections to assist you with your question formulation/choice.

    Hobbies 
 

 

 

 

Family 

    Sport 

Fitness

Task 3 (Individual long turn) 
Before the test, select 6 or 7 different photos/sets of photos from Campaign 2 or choose new 
photos that reflect the content of Campaign  2. Prepare a list of general questions for each 
photo such as: What/Who can you see in the photo? What is he/are they doing? Where are 
they?, etc. Encourage each candidate to talk as much as they can about the chosen photo, but 
do interrupt if you feel that they have memorised anything. Timing: 2–3 minutes.

Note that we have not suggested adherence to any particular assessment scales as teachers 
may wish to use these speaking tasks as practice for a forthcoming exam and as such, may 
wish to apply established scales to the above tasks.
