1 high and popular culture

  1. How can we say that something belongs to popular culture and some other phenomenon does not? Where is the borderline beyond which high culture begins? Do you think that one has to be controversial to be popular (think of TV shows etc.)?

It’s difficult to say if something belongs to popular culture, so I will try to say what is high culture or popular culture. I think high culture is unique, creative and original. Very often it’s created by educated people or talented people or artists. For example we say that opera, theater, books, ballet and classical music belong to high culture. In my opinion high culture teaches you something and makes you better person. High culture has some standards.

What is popular culture often called a pop culture?

Pop culture is for the masses, therefore it’s not original, it’s repetitive (powtarzalna), widely availability and commercial.

The next question is whether, it is worth to be controversial. In many situation you have to be controversial, if you want to be famous, so for example there are many programs like Big Brothers or Kuba Wojewódzki.

With regard (odnośnie) to Big Brother where people are isolated house, they do certain tasks very often ridiculous. TV viewers vote and decide who must leave the house. This program is very often vulgar and aggressive, because this increases the viewership.

But in my opinion you don’t have to be controversial if you want to be famous. If you have talents and the idea of yourself, people will respect you and do not judge. For example, there are many talents programs like X-factor, You can dance, Got talent, where people sing, dance, play musical instruments and this is very interesting and they become famous, begin career and even win money.

Thank you, that’s all I wanted to say about this topic.
